I can understand them telling me if the lane is closed and recommending. This need to put on an annoying little smile and with a smile and say "Sorry," with the cocky tone which is what touches my buttons.
I wish the cashier would tell me themselves and not leave it up to these annoying costumers.
If the customer told you with a stony expression that could be taken as unfriendly. They are smiling to reassure you. They are not rubbing it in.
