I knew this guy, he was actually friendly to me at first, but one time he insulted me in front of some other guys.
I had some long hair and he made a comment about my hair being from the seventies.

he said it so a few of the guys could hear.

Was this just a good natured joke or did he have some resentment?

I dont know him anymore so I cant ask him.

Also what do you do when someone does this?

My guess is he didn't like your hair style and was making fun of you because of it. That is rude.

The best thing to do is ignore comments like these and not respond.

I wait and I observe. Once I know their weakness, I exploit it...

"Where is Tom? Probably faking ... Um ... taking another cigarette break."

"That's Tom ... Never around when we need him."

"My job? Fix whatever Tom breaks."

"Tom sure is sociable! What's his job, anyway?"

... And so forth.

(Tom no longer works here, by the way...)

Sounds like a joke to me, but a lot depends on the tone and context, which are lacking in a second hand account. Personally, I'm inclined to extend the benefit of the doubt, it's easier than holding grudges.

insult them back in a friendly way. yeah? you're jealous cuz my hair is f****n sexy and you can't grow it this long. but say it in a way where you sound not so serious.

it says you're both cool and confident, and it makes people like you.

Same here.

Or I just laugh it off and go on my way without making deal about it.
There is no point in getting offended or getting into it with someone you'll never see again.

Sounds like a jape to me, which I wouldn't take too seriously. If he had meant it as an insult then if it were me I would have thought of a rebuttal, probably a jape or an insult as well, back at him.
