Right, so I am going to a surprise birthday gathering/drink tommorow for someone I have never spoken to before, just seen around and has friends in common, I will be going with a girl who is interested in me and finds any and all excuses to hang around with me, what could possibly go wrong, apart from everything? should I greet the birthday girl right away? wait for her to be free? just mind my own buisness?

I think you should go to the birthday girl first and greet her, even if she's talking to someone else at that moment. That's common, I think. She is the most important person and should know that you're there and have thought of her birthday. When this is done, you don't have to worry about talking to her anymore and can enjoy the party.

Do you bring a gift? Or is this not expected, because you don't really know her? If it's a private party (not at a bar/restaurant), you could also bring something to drink or eat. But I don't know exactly what is expected in your peer group, it's just what I and my friends would do.

By the way, this girl who will be there with you, it sounds like you won't have to worry that something could go wrong with her. :D

Definitely greet the birthday girl.

Just be yourself. You're amongst people you know. Just act like you always act.

I concur to the two suggestions above. Also, are you interested in the girl who is interested in you? Just be yourself at the party, talk to the birthday girl, and just enjoy yourself as well. People seem much happier to talk to someone who is happy with themselves.

Definitely greet the birthday girl. Maybe even buy her a drink. It's her birthday.

The girl you are going with might have some advice, too, on what to bring.

If you are interested in her, asking her would probably only increase her interest in you...
