We're pitied by some people because of our lack of friends and abnormal interests, but would you really want to be "normal"? Socialization, sports, getting drunk, and the other "fun" neurotypical hobbies all seem overrated to me. I don't feel like I'm missing out on much by not being neurotypical.

No, I don't want to be normal.

I do want others to respect my differences. I respect that they are different from me, they think different, they talk different, their motivations in life are different.

I want them to respect my personal space as well. I respect their personal space by not invading it, not touching things that don't belong to me unless I have permission, and not trying to "hug" them when they are having a bad day.

Know what you mean.
Friends: Fun sometimes, but a pain in the ass the rest of it. Keeping current on their lives etc takes a lot out of me. Screw it.
Drinking/clubs: Not a lot of clubs played music I liked, and as far as drinking goes, I'd rather do that at home where I know where the toilet is, and my bed for the after-puking. Throw in the ridiculous pricing for drinks and it's a sure bet I'm stayin' home.
Can't stand most sports and the one or two sports I'm interested in (Formula 1) take place mostly in Europe. Football (US)? Blah. Basketball? Blah. Baseball? Blah. Only mainstream sport I like is hockey.

I don't feel that I'm missing out on anything. I don't want to be hangning out with scantly-dressed Valley Girls, in a Bar or a Club, where there's Rap music playing in the background, paying a fortune for Drinks. I'd rather spend an evening in my new apartment, enjoying my Tea, doing coloured sketches of me Double Deckers and logging to Wrong Planet, for 20 minutes on each hour, while I listen to Dr. Joy Browne.

my opinion is "yes" as in our limitations regarding what can be comprehended. the nt world is an illusion, as in, Appearances mean everything. That is the way and order of thier living. From politics to entertainment, there is nothing but gray areas. I think as a whole Aspies are pretty ambiguous individuals which in turn confuses the NT world. NTs then have to "code" everything in order to speak directly to one another. social rules and whatnot that need to be followed. so much is unstated or understated in their community. it's just a damn confusing mess, which in turn places confines on an aspie. to "fit in" to thier world we must play thier game, something in which I don't wholly think is possible. Denial is probrably the closest that any aspie will come to "fitting in". I think that such things as "cure autism now" or whatever it is called, is the Nt's way of trying to categorize/restrict aspies even more, since to them our existence seems to be nothing but a nuisance. in a way I think that being yourself and annoying the nt world is almost the best way of getting yourself noticed. heheheheh.

just my opinion

i could be wrong.

Oh most definitely ! !!
We're missing out on fretting over what's fashionable to wear. We're missing out on being fascinated with who will win American Idol!! ! We're missing out on sharing what we thought about the latest must-watch Tv show that everyone is at the office is watching. We're missing out on believing every word that comes out of the president's mouth. We're missing out on loving to go shopping, the thrill of clothing stores, the utter joy of going to the grocery!! ! We're missing out on believing that animals don't feel pain, or have emotions, or feelings ! ! (It's only a dog.) We're missing out on having a foggy idea of what happened during WWII, but we're right up to date on the newest band, or what Paris Hilton is doing this week.

OMG, somebody shoot me ! !! Be a NewT??? I'd rather be thrown into a time machine, and forced to kiss Hitler ! !! !! !! !!

Are you all f*****g serious? Do you you actually believe this s**t you're writing here?

Why is it that all AS people get their panties in a bunch whenever someone makes a comment about their appearence, interest or conduct but see it as their god-given right to spew forth every stereotype they can make up about anyone they dont like and act like smug cock about it?

Great post, my friend. I concur.

Our isolation from the NT world allows us more relaxation, reflection, and time to consider what is truly important and true. Truth and logic, are things Aspies know more of than most NT's could ever dream of knowing.

Shouldn't that be "... I WOULD like to hang out..."?
Unless there's something you're not telling us.

Sometimes I sit in a corner, at university, and watch people around me. They are talking and laughing. I can't understand what they are talking about and why they are laughing, but I understand that they are happy. Then I think that I am really missing out on much. Because I can't communicate with them.

I have read a book. It is about a person who died. Her body was buried, but she still could be with people. But they couldn't see her, and she couldn't influence or affect them. She could only observe them. Sometimes she felt that she is missing out on very much.
I thought that I died soon after I was born. So people treat me like I was not real.

Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on things. Then I realise that I like being on my own, and I like not being mocked or pointed at, or being made the office oddity because I'm not interested in football or Pop Idol or Big Brother. Hell, I'd rather be the way I am than be like my younger brother, who's got a fascination with drink and soft drugs that makes me want to cry...

I used to wish I was more normal well sort of, now I just look at what most people talk about and think thank god these people are so blinkered!
