"Misanthropy is a general dislike, distrust, disgust, contempt, or hatred of the human species"

Seems like a sensible philosophy to me. After all, humans are little more than chimps with less hair and a better vocubulary. Even though they think they are far superior.

I don't hate the human species. I just find them boring for the most part. I have so little in common with most people.

I do not feel this way in the slightest.

I claim to be a misanthrope because all people annoy the hell out of me (even those to whom I am close) to the point that I would rather spend most of my day locked away in my room. This being said, I don't actually harbor hatred toward people, and only have a true dislike for a select few...so, I may or may not qualify...

Now that I think of it, I suppose I am a misanthrope.
That's assuming I understand the definition.
Most humans are absolutely vile.
If you've been paying attention, how can you see them any other way?

Kinda odd to have posted this under social skills and making friends.... counterintuitive like. :lol:

I can remember being about 10-11 years old, having found out what misanthropy was and thinking that must be what I was, a misanthrope.

40 years later, I think it might be a recovering misanthrope... there are a couple of humans I like. Most days. :roll:

Why, in the face of species devastation from global warming, isn't human population reduction even being mentioned?

I'm a misanthrope to. Not being one would be unlike me. (warning) Do I distrust humanity? Certainly. Hatered is debatable. I feel down right intimidated by people. Somehow, most people magicaly assume that we are some kind of ego trip. But, see.. egotistical people actualy care about themselves. :| The only reason, a human befriends another is for personal gain, in my experiance. We consume just about anything to. I hate being human sometimes.

Personally I choose not to befriend most people because most people have more to gain from me than vice versa. So most people have or are taking advantage of me. I don't hate people just rather not get to know them. Plus I hate it when people judge me, they put you down just to make themselves feel better. On bad days I curse society but i don't really hate people.

I think like any thing related to the social in life misanthropy is a two way street. It may begin at either end. People treat you like crap, you feel like crap, so you hold it against the World. Or if you start out with that attitude people can sense it and throw it right back in your face.

Misanthropy seems to be popular now - with all the wars and violence it's easy to call alot of people bad, selfish, etc forgetting that we are the same. I think it handicaps our ability to collectively improve ourselves.

I say this because I myself still have misanthropic traits; I constantly think nobody cares about me, or in a lot of cases anybody else but maybe close friends and family. Strangers are either treated neutrally or with hostility. It seems people can be friendly, but often to benefit themselves. I try not to start out with this mindset and find that, unless your misnathropy is deep seated and not as a result of feeling aggrieved, if you're nice to people most people will be nice to you. There are some people who for some strange reason are always horrible and nasty and I find it's best to avoid them or be humane to them while still telliing what what you think of them.

During the conversation on Thanksgiving, we were talking about some of things that are happening politically… but, according to my brother, we can’t do anything about it because upsetting the status quo that would effect his pension…
I commented on the fact that everyone owns a tiny chunk of everything (through mutual funds, pension funds and such) so that no one controls anything…

Actually, that’s not true. SOMEONE is in charge. The five or six vilest creatures in history are currently in control of the whole world. We still have a little time and could change that, without a violent revolution. Unfortunately, most of the people who vote are like my brother – “but what about my pension…”

Quote:
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.
(Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following
the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group.)

The weirdest part is that my brother is a Jewish convert, and married a Jew. I want to ask him why they recite the story of the Holocaust, and whether it contains some special lesson we should remember.

It’s happening again, right here, right now, and this time the perpetrator is the US government. This time, the only people who can speak out -- the only people who are in a position to stand up to it -- is us.

Had I been alive during the time of slavery, I would have been fully awake to the realities of it, that the entire economic system was based on an horrific practice, but I would have been something of a coward. Going around talking about it openly when everyone you know owns slaves is not a good way to make friends. And it wouldn’t have done much good for an individual to stand alone like that. Still, we can mention it once in a while.

My brother is comparable to one of those gentlemen plantation owners. I’m sure he thinks he’s a nice guy, and that he legitimately earned every penny. It’s hard work, keeping those shiftless, lazy servants on task. And they’re such ingrates – everyone knows that the ONLY ALTERNATIVE to working on our happy, polite little plantation is to be sold down the river.

Today, if you connect the dots and acknowledge reality, they’ll just classify you as a member of the tinfoil hat brigade…

Gad, I hate the world.

I sometimes have particularly misanthropic days. today for example. nothing in particular has happened, but my coworkers were just so annoying and made me feel disgust towards 99% of human population, who's just so petty, uninteresting and only interested in bringing others down. most people are just, well, obsolete :P

most of the time I'm indifferent though, but I do like the awe and confusion that watching their behaviour creates.
