Are there any alternatives to Meetup that are relatively popular and free of payments?
To make some friends in almost new place for me and to have an opportunity to talk about my hobby I wanted to establish Meetup group of learning Conservative European History (age of Imperialism, far-Right movements of 1910-1940's, Third Reich, Franco's Spain, Kingdom of Italy, Tzardom of Bulgaria, World Wars 1 and 2, Spanish Civil War, Abyssinian War and so on, generally between 1848 and 1945 with some extensions). But Meetup charges monthly fee for having group there, and it could be like dozen bucks a month. I just don't ready to throw such money just for having a single group, so maybe there are any other opportunities?

How about a group Skype call? I think there is a limit to how many people can use video chat, but as far as I know a regular audio chat is unlimited. You can discuss European History with who you want without having to leave the comfort of your own home.

In fact yes (though I prefer live meetings, with beer and pretzels :D ) but the major point I was looking on Meetup is that there interested people can find your club by location nearby. Even on facebook it's more difficult for them to actually find the club.

You can still have beer and pretzels. :P

I suppose you could advertise, by word of mouth or something else, or join a forum specific to that subject and see who would be interested in doing that. It seems like there is a forum for everything these days.

Drinking alone is often related to alcohloism so I try to do it not every day :D

I want to find people around also because this August I'm moving to Philly area, US, and want to make some friends there. And what could be the best reason to meet if not common interests?

But maybe you are right, and I have to look through on forums.

There may be some people right here on Wrong Planet that are in the area and would be interested in discussing such a topic.

You could create a post asking if anyone is in the area.

I'm meeting with people on meet up for the first time in about an hour's time. I feel really mentally drained and tired but I'm going to make an effort and go. Most of the groups I've looked at including this one I'm going to ask for a contribution from group members to help with the group running costs.
