Does anyone else need to have to do a "Do I Look Normal?" check before they leave the house? I'm entering middle age and I guess it's not always my first inclination anymore to know that I look weird until someone says something to me.

For example, I was talking to a professional contact today and realized I had on:
-a black t-shirt that say "boooring" on the back
-fully exposed tattoo sleeves and tattooed feet
-sandals showing my toes, with a bruised toe
-ripped jeans
-my hair was down so I looked like tawny kitaen
-my wedding ring has an "icanhazcheezburger" lolcat on it
-I had my toddler with me, who has a macklemore haircut and was hitting on the woman I was trying to talk to

The lady said something about my arms and I was like ohhh no I should have put on long sleeves to at least lessen how weird I look. Does anyone else have this problem? Like you're out somewhere and have a sudden realization that you look like a weirdo?

I realize I look like a weirdo every time I see myself in a mirror. I forget it soon afterwards. If anything mitigates the shock to others, it's that I'm a much less sophisticated weirdo than you, because I'm not really used to choosing my clothes, and tattoos would be unthinkable.

All the time, however, it's better than walking outside nude. Too European for me.
Be thyself, be confident and dress with what makes you feel good and yourself.

I'm confident I can say I don't believe I've ever left the house looking "normal" in my adult life. The closest I may get would be when I'm headed to my job, although things like my mullet and my sandals with socks still come off "wierd" to a lot of those that see me at work. I know some of the traditional conservative thinkers at my workplace have "trashtalked" me behind my back for "pushing" the dress code there. FWIW, I don't have any permanent tatoos due to my being a big sissy with needles as a result of my SPD. I do wear a nose ring on my days off though, but strictly cosmetic (shhh!).

I agree with the above poster that you need to dress to please yourself first and not others.

I've never suddenly realized it, I've always been quite aware.

I would think you look rather cute, actually, especially when combined with your discourse.

You must have been WILD when you were younger!

I don't really think about how I look. My primary concerns are comfort and subdued colors ( I get bugged by bright colors ).

Do I ever suddenly realize I look like a weirdo?

Briefly. Then I forget and move on.

No not suddenly, I am already pre-aware of that usually....I will never surrender the metal band t-shirts, jeans with holes in them. I don't have any tattoos yet, but seriously considering getting a couple at least I don't know I dress kind of obscure but I like how I dress I find 'normal dress' mudane and boring...I prefer to look like a metalhead or hippie I guess since both of those reflect my general demeanor...and I enjoy the clothing styles associated with those subcultures and well the music can't go wrong with psychedelic and metal.

My cousin just had a baby, but she's a metalhead and I doubt she's going to entirely surrender that for a more 'normal' image and I also don't doubt she can be a good mother to her child.

Only if my entire situationally aware existence counts as suddenly. I might as well hammer a "beware of hippie" sign into my front yard. Can't afford them for now but I'd really like some hacker tattoos when I find the time to sketch them out.

Criticizing others' appearance is weak and should be responded to accordingly. I should charge people a dollar to whinge about my surfer hair, three minutes a turn. Aesthetics count for quite a lot biologically, I see no reason for anyone to spend their whole life camouflaged.

I realise people sometimes think I look like a weirdo, but I myself don't see it. For example I've had people ask if I was a goth just because I wear long, black clothes a lot. I like to wear gloves that match my tights and my outfit and because I like warm hands, but I get asked why I'm wearing gloves when it's warm or if I'm afraid of germs. Same goes for when I wear a winter scarf in Summer (It makes me feel snug and I just like it). Also, people ask why I never take my coat off and seem to want to prise it off me, not understanding that I like wearing it. One well-meaning lady at church once thought I was homeless because of the state of my coat, which is very well worn and fraying. I was a little insulted to begin with.
