Hi:
I had attended a lunch and learn for a religious group that I belong to at my university. After I was on my way to the library when I ran into another student whose new this year who also happens to be a part of the group. I gave him a traditional blessing for the weekend and they got offended by repeatedly shouting "I don't rule on that day of worship" over and over again.

Did I do anything wrong?

Even if you had done something wrong, one individual in that group should have taken you aside and said something, not make a public spectacle out of it. I personally wouldn't have anything to do with such a group. It sounds to me like you are involved with a bunch of self-righteous hypocrites.

Sounds like the way some phrases are intensifiers to most people and blasphemy to others, except this person flew off the handle where it seemed they would have all the context they needed to come up with an amicable response. They come off like a sectarian nut.

People misinterpret one's best wishes all the time, they just usually do so quietly. What's key is keeping your head above it until you're in the right spot to clear up someone's perceptions. People think I'm disingenuous all the time when I'm really just lackadaisical.

...What did " rule " mean here ?
Presuming that it was a Christian religiousgroup , was this about different interpretations of what the Sabbath day is? (The Jehovah's Witnesses and the - by their very name ! !! - Seventh Day Adventists , for two , follow Saturday , not Sunday , as the Sabbath .)

Actually this group is not a bunch of religious nut jobs. In fact everyone else who attends is really welcoming and accepting. He was the first kid who had threw a tantrum. He was really rude to me about a month ago when I first met him at a bbq. He asked me if I was supposed to be some sort of teacher. I said no and that I am a student. It was awkward.

As for the group it's not a Christian and I would rather not say due to the possibility of offending some people.
