I lucked out.

My sister inlaw and I treat each other like the older brother/younger sister neither of us ever had.

Maybe that's the best approach to the concept of inlaws.

Me too. I get along GREAT with the inlaws: it does hurt that my future father-in-law is semi-Aspie himself and loves sports just like me and my future mother-in-law is becoming friends with my mother. My future sister-in-law lives just around the corner from me and is the same age as me and has treated me with nothing but respect, especially after the engagement. After years of failure I think I hit the jackpot, especially coming from a dysfunctional family where nobody talks to each other.

Even better, she also helped me move into that apartment when I only knew her sister for a few months. That's when I knew it was time to find an engagement ring! When I did ask her to marry me after less than 5 months, her family's reaction was pretty much that they were expecting it. I strongly suspect they talked to her and told her not to let me get away. No worries there :)
