Understanding difference between the serious and joking

Last week we had exchange students and teachers from China.
As part of the week their http://magician.org/member/drlaugh4u a ping ping tournament.
Long story short I won the tournament.
I was dual minded
Glad I won and felt bad at the same time.
I got some congratulations from our students and staff
More congratulations and handshakes from the Chinese delegation
One staff said with a straight face something like they came all the way from China and ___ took the trophy. I guess every other time our guest won.
I felt more on the bad side and then asked several people who thought it was jabbing or joking.
I asked our Chinese/mandarin teachers and they verified I didn't start an international incident. One building principal wrote me and said I was a good ambassador for the district with my connections that night.
me... A bit - sometimes big double minded.
Any similar situations you can share are appreciated.
