Should I have appreciated this more at the time?

When I was younger (especially when I had very long hair) my brother and his friends said how much I look like soccer player Lionel Messi. At 5'7 3/4 I am short like him too (Messi is 5'6 1/2).

Personally I don't really care about soccer but I think my friends intended it to be a compliment. I didn't quite see it as a flattering remark because I have read some negative comments on the internet about his 'looks'.

I don't get the comments as much as these days and infact some people have said I look like a 90s David Beckham (I now have curtains hairstyle) which is a huge compliment to me.

Do you think perhaps at the time I should have appreciated the comparisons between the greatest footballer in the world? Rather than seeing it as an insult to how I look.

Perhaps.
