...is it awkward, and how do you cope?

Currently I'm in situation where I'm friends with
1) someone who's normal and considerably better-liked than I am
2) someone who has even worse social skills than I do and is liked by even fewer people than I am

In situation #1, I feel self conscious and can't help but think I'm tolerated by the rest of the group only because of the person I'm friends with has vouched for me

In situation #2, I've noticed I... try not to be too associated with that person? I know it sounds bad and who am I to feel embarrassed by who I'm friends with, but I feel that whenever I invite this person to group events I have two strikes against me. Also, there's passive aggressiveness in the way they express dislike toward this person (who's so Aspie she doesn't even notice it) and it's always made me uncomfortable.

I have been friends with someone who is more popular then me before (they were my only friend at the time anyway) it was okay, his friends generally just ignored me and treated me like i wasn't there so it wasn't too awkward i guess. i guess it depends on who the person/people around you are.

which comes to the point, why the hell are there so many social rules yet they have like a billion different exceptions, we don't stand a chance
