How to ask my mom something?

Hello,
My moms birthday is coming up soon and I want to take her out to a restaurant but I have no idea what one is her favorite. How do I ask subtly without letting her know what I'm planning? Do I get her a gift too or is the dinner enough? I have never done this before.

If you are in good standing with your dad, ask him.

If not; you can simply ask your mother directly, and reveal why.
This will spoil the surprise a bit, but i can assume that the idea itself will be enough of a surprise.

Ask her what type of food she likes, and tell her what you like.
