Several months back, I was invited to watch my little brother's outdoor basketball game. Sports aren't really my thing, so I had trouble focusing on what was happening (even more than usual). I looked around, and I noticed a little girl playing on the monkey bars. There was something about the way she was hanging that made it seem like she was about to fall down. I didn't think anyone else was watching her with the game going on, so I decided to be her unofficial guardian until the game was over. Then my mom pulled me over and bitterly told me stop what I was doing because I could get arrested for being that close to a young child. I'm usually not the kind of person to argue back when people question my behavior in a way that borders on brow-beating, especially since experience has taught me that doing so only infuriates the other party even more (rule 14, anyone?), so I reluctantly backed down.
With all that said, my question here is what should I do the next time I'm in a similar situation? Should I watch over kids in danger that I just met and risk getting harassed for seeming like a pedophile? Should I ignore said kids and risk getting harassed for letting them injure themselves? Or should I just stay an introvert and risk getting harassed for not spending enough time outside with other people?
