Trouble talking in group events
(I'm having a hard time illustrating my memory of the event but please bear with me)
I went out to a social group that I have been a part of's monthly meet and eat.
I didn't arrive late but a little after the get together started (It started 7:00, I came about ten or so minutes later) so the people who showed up were already seated and I sat at the table's end since it was the closest seat. I found it hard to join in since the ones doing the most talking were talking about traveling abroad and I've never done so in my life so far. Occasionally something would come up that I could join in on but the conversations wouldn't last long if I said anything. I would mainly get something like "That's cool." (A common occurrence in my social interactions) and whoever replied to me would go back to the person they were sitting next to. Sure, I was sitting next to someone but I was the last person at the table and that person was talking to the one on his right so I became the odd man out because there was no one else seated next to me or directly in front of me. The music at the place was loud and I have a soft voice so trying to talk to anyone at that point was almost impossible. People started leaving at that point and I went home since my social energy got sapped.
What could I have done differently?
