I've been looking to get a vehicle to use to drive from Oregon to South Dakota in the middle of January for grad school, so I went out car shopping yesterday. Fortunately my mom went with me, but it was still fairly unnerving having to deal with used car sales men, just listening to her haggle with one caused me to freak out a bit to the extent my hands started shaking a bit and I had to walk a distance away.

And if anyone's interested, this is the beast I'm looking at:

A bit ironic that I'm looking into buying a vehicle that's considered a gas guzzler so I can make it to a college to research biofuels.

:D :D :D Ironic yes, but you do need a sturdy car. Since neither I nor my husband can stand the process of haggling, we pay a car broker 100 dollars or so to order the car for us at the lowest price we would get if we knew how to haggle.

A Range Rover like that will be just the thing, you can make some cash on the side pulling other cars out of snowdrifts when they get stuck. If it's a diesel engine then you can convert it to biofuel for your research but if it's a petrol model then forgetaboutit.

Just close your eyes when you fill up with gas. That fuel tank is big enough to house a small family.

It's actually a Discovery II, about the same as the Range Rover, but more meant for off-road endeavors. I probably would have ended up converting it to ethanol (or at least E85-capable), since using biodiesel would require a new engine (you can use both diesel and biodiesel with the same engine without any modifications).

However, we ended up not getting it, since the salesman decided it would be swell to talk down to my mom (a nurse) and me (a chemical engineer). Fortunately we found a Subaru Forester for a great deal at the car wars thing they had at the fair grounds.

Just somewhat of a pointless update, mostly because it makes me feel good about what's happening with the salesman since he caused me to freak out a bit and talked down to me. Four months ago, he wouldn't take our offer of $8000 cash right there, saying that it would be sold "in a week" at the price of $11,000 it was at that point. Right now, it's still sitting in the lot, now for $8,800. My mom and I laugh every time we drive by, and are tempted to go in and offer him $6,000 for it, just to mess with him.
