I am primarily a voice actor. As an air personality, for many years in my early career, I would try to emulate many of the major market jocks I admired. Then, what helped me the most, was getting into voice-over work under the direction of a very patient and expressive guru. She showed me how to make the big words BIG and use the softness of my voice to more effectively convey emotion.
By embracing my AS, I have become better at yeilding to my co-host, letting her shine brightly. I have learned to be less over-bearing and thus, enjoy myself more. Respecting the verbal reality of a free-flowing, somewhat stream-of-conciousness show has also helped me a great deal in overcoming the tendency to over-rehearse in my head what is to be said and put more emphasis on trusting my insticts. I have a natural tendency towards plenty of puns, poetic rhythms and aliteration, which all combined, I hope, make for compelling content.
It also helps that I do a morning show and I am not fully awake enough to completly understand the implications of my shear utter goofiness.
But, hey, it's a living....and moreover, it's a life!
