Anyone else into the performing arts? Because I've heard it can really help with social skills. It helps you come out of your shell and be more yourself, as well as work with people and gain self-respect.

I think it would be good for Aspies to try acting, because it really helps you socially, if you're into that sorta thing!

So, anyone wanna take center stage?

yep - semi-pro actor, singer, stand up comic. it all helped me. now, if i have a difficult social situation to get through, i decide who am i am, and then play that part. bloody knackering, and it wouldn't work for everyone. oh, and it doesn't always work.

whoops - have i put everyone off yet? sorry.

Come to think of it, my social activities started nosediving after I stopped acting.

Acting, music performance, college radio, and debating were all a big part of my gaining some self assurance, especially the acting and radio.

Highly recommended.

It's true that by studying other characters and create them, you might learn to better handle social situations.

Also, the people who do these things tend to be open to difference (and I don't mean that as a double entendre) and so more receptive. Some of the best support I ever received was from some of the other theater members at college. I still see some of them from time to time, and they know I am grateful.

I am primarily a voice actor. As an air personality, for many years in my early career, I would try to emulate many of the major market jocks I admired. Then, what helped me the most, was getting into voice-over work under the direction of a very patient and expressive guru. She showed me how to make the big words BIG and use the softness of my voice to more effectively convey emotion.

By embracing my AS, I have become better at yeilding to my co-host, letting her shine brightly. I have learned to be less over-bearing and thus, enjoy myself more. Respecting the verbal reality of a free-flowing, somewhat stream-of-conciousness show has also helped me a great deal in overcoming the tendency to over-rehearse in my head what is to be said and put more emphasis on trusting my insticts. I have a natural tendency towards plenty of puns, poetic rhythms and aliteration, which all combined, I hope, make for compelling content.

It also helps that I do a morning show and I am not fully awake enough to completly understand the implications of my shear utter goofiness.

But, hey, it's a living....and moreover, it's a life!

I've been taking acting classes, and I agree that it's helping me to come out of my shell and be less self-conscious. In fact, that's pretty much the main point of the classes.

I'm also aspiring to be an on-air personality, and would love to have coaching like oatwillie had.

Um does participating in school and church plays count? I was in a few church plays and school but the one that was the most recently was back in November '94 when I had a small part as a fairy in A MidSummers' Night Dream at the Bauer Theatre at the university I went to. Thankfully it wasn't a speaking part but wearing what was akin to a ballet outfit and all and trying to dance was an issue for sure. Definitely wasn't as graceful as some of the others but apparently I was graceful enough. It saved me a midterm exam in English Lit 100 course that year.

Sure. All my acting, radio, and musical performance was in high school or college. It matters little that it was a small part. The whole experience of rehearsal and performance is terriffic for drawing folks out.

I tend to act all of the time in real life, more due to being unable to chat to people without some sort of 'persona'

I find I change that persona dramatically depending on who I am with. It is quite frightening really and very manipulative. I like to learn about someone, what they like and how they do things, then I alter my 'persona' to match theirs. It works perfectly unless I am with more than one person and then I retract back into my shell otherwise I would end up really confused. I make sure I don't lie because that isn't healthy, I just find things that are true and work with them.

Choir for the most part right now. That, and Musical Theatre class. Choir has definitely helped me out of my shell lately. I did some acting a while back, but mostly stuck to tech becasure I was good at it.

I did speech and debate in high school (mostly the debate parts, well all debate) and it did help me a little bit but mostly by giving me new friends and peers.

I love acting, especially in class plays. Due to my insane schedule of other extracurricular activities, I have not yet had the time to act outside of school or participate in any large performances yet. :( But performing Shakespeare in English class and any sort of something in Spanish has always been a lot of fun for me.

Acting (and RPGs) have also helped me a lot with my social skills. I've learned to take what I pick up from acting as various characters/personas onstage (in pretend) and use this to my advantage when working with people. :)
