Do you find that if you don’t socialize, you regress?

People talk about Aspies not being social, but I feel the need to be extremely social so my social skills don’t go out the window. Can anyone else relate?

I agree with that premise 100%.

When I don't socialize, I do regress.

I don't feel the need to be "extremely social," though.

If I don't socialize, I regress faster than if I do socialize

But always regression

Merely socializing is not necessarily beneficial for me

You can't measure social skills

And is it worth the cost benefit analysis

That's like saying, if I eat too much kit Kat, I will be physically weaker

Yes but even if I eat the perfect diet, I will get sick and drop dead sooner or later

So whatever

Yes, I can relate to that. When I've been reclusive for a while, I sometimes start to doubt whether I can remember even the basics of how to have a conversation, and I have to get back into socialising in very small steps at first.

Yes, I've noticed that. But, my socializing is the best it has ever been right now at age 55. I socialize at work and once a month with a special interest club.

No, when I don't socialize, I rest.
That may be caused by a fact that I cannot refrain totally from socializing in my family situation.

Yes, I get depressed if I haven't socialised for a few days. Positive social interaction releases dopamine, which makes me feel increasingly happy about myself and even beats depression.

Yes but socializing seems meaningless

I don't think I regress per say but I do get lonely. I enjoy my own company but I have learnt that I need to be social (as much as this realisation can annoy me sometimes).

I do notice that I can lose my people reading skills a bit though. I like to think of it like playing an instrument, missing a few days of practice doesn't do any real harm to my skills but stop playing for a few years and I forget how to read music!

At the moment I'm quite appreciative of the fact I work with some really good people that for the most part I get on well with. They provide me with most of my social interaction and I have more recently been spending time with some of them outside of work.

I don't like socialising, but events have proven that when I get reclusive... say over a period of six months... I definitely regress and start to disappear up my own fundament. It's best (for me) to avoid over-socialising and seek a bit of quiet when I need it, but sometimes I have to get up and get out.
