I need some help dealing with an unfair situation
I have anxiety, ADHD, and was recently diagnosed with autism.
About 2 and a half years ago, I had begun having an obsessive fear that involved some medical resident that was attending my church and since I was too scared to talk to her in person or anyone about it, but not being able to keep it to myself any longer, I began messaging her on Facebook about the issue, only to be ignored, which only added more obsessive fear as to why I was being ignored. Then being so frustrated, I got mad and told her to block me, but being blocked only added more obsessive fear. One of her brothers had intervened by making it so that anytime I emailed her, the message would get redirected to her, but I had no idea she wasn't actually reading them.
So I kept on emailing either of them because all I wanted was an answer to dismiss my fears, but they would just keep ignoring me for many months until finally the brother gets my pastor to intervene to tell me that he thinks I have an unhealthy focus on them and then the brother finally emails back only to say not to contact him anymore.
What really bothers me about this whole situation is that they left me completely obvious, scared, and confused for so long and then they finally decide to tell me their concern about my unhealthy obsessing? They thought it was healthy to withhold this insight from me and then months later tell me not to talk to them? I can't seem to stop ruminating over this situation over and over to the point that I just can't seem to focus on anything else.
I was just wondering what kind of advice people here would have that might help me.
Do whatever you can to try to distract yourself. Those people aren't obligated to oblige you in any way and don't owe you any kind of response. Not replying to you is a response of its own.
Do you have a therapist to talk with about this? Any movies or books that might engage your mind?
It's hard to distract myself when occasionally I see that someone likes a Facebook post and the like is invisible, which is usually a sign that one of the persons who blocked me liked the post. Being remind that I'm blocked over and over sure doesn't help me forget about it.
I have a therapist and I've mentioned it, but I just haven't been bringing it up anymore. I talk to my pastor about it though and I've looked into some books or videos about how to deal with my anxiety issues.
My therapist recommended I watch The Good Doctor to help distract my mind, but I find myself getting distracted from the distraction to go on obsessing again about these people. I can't seem to find a job (I'm living with my dad) and I'm not in college, so I have way too much time on my hands.
I'm thinking now how I could solve this issue and just now I had an interesting idea... I could suggest that my therapist and even my pastor could give me "homework" so that I'd have to study something from a book or movie and then take like a quiz to see what I learned.
Your intent sounded good in which you did what you could to put the ball in that person's court by being honest but the choice was really up to her but I do think it was rude that she didn't acknowledge how you felt. However, you kept on contacting them which they didn't want which got to a level of harassment. Still, they could have contacted you sooner and asked you to stop. However, leave them alone as they don't sound very nice.
What can you do?
1. Do some art therapy - Draw, paint, write, whatever it is.
2. Talk with a counselor
3. Look into some mantras and positive affirmations
4. Think about all the people you do get along with at church and invest in them
5. Just continue to talk to your pastor about healthy habits
