I found this awesome website, called couchsurfing.com and the people there I have met have been really good. I went to the US this last week and met some of the CS people, good people and you don't have to get hit up for money by the hotels! They ask to provide you real info for security purposes and whatnot, and just to foster a community of honesty and friendship between travellers... if anyones interested I just thought I'd let you know!

Two things

1) Always have backup places and people to stay with in the same city:)
2) Refer #1

:)

I've only heard this term used by the college crowd.

Didn't know there was a community of them.

Suppose we started one for the folks here? Bring your own sheets and pillow cases (your preferred fabric).

Although, I'd have to give up my bed (the futon/couch) so a visitor could couch surf here.

I don't mind sleeping on the floor.

I suggested this idea some time ago. I had a couple of people sign up to my idea but nothing more after that.

I like to travel, so it SOUNDS like a good idea...but actually it kind of freaks me out. I don't want to visit a stranger, no offense. How do you know to trust them, and isn't it a little uncomfortable to make conversation with a stranger at the end of a long day in a foreign place? I guess it's just not for me...

But good luck and have fun to those of you who couchsurf, LOL. :)

And how many "strangers" are normal kids just like the kids you grew up with in school? Give me a break :)

Well, there'd be a process of talking. And the people would meet in a public place (like a café or library, say) to make sure it's all safe. A lot of it relies on goodwill, really. And I've met people from online before - as long as you're careful and don't give too much information away you should be OK. I understand it's not for everyone but it might be good for those Aspies that would like to meet fellow travellers.

I see. It does sound like a good idea in many ways; I guess it's just not for me. Didn't mean to bring down the thread.
