"huh" and "what"
Since 15, it's been a pet peeve of mine hearing annoying lil dipshits act like every thought and emotion that goes through their heads, are the latest greatest scientific invention. They talk too much, too loud, and too enthusiastically. Sometimes they talk too much i get a f*****g headache. (paucity of content). It's f*****g annoying to listen to those ass holes flap their stupidass traps. And then when i try to say the slightest thing, those idiots half listen and grunt "huh" and "what" instead of "excuse me". They act like "huh" and "what" are the etiquette equivalent of "excuse me". They get on my f*****g nerves, s**t. "Excuse me" might not even be in their stupidass vocabulary. When my "parents" were still alive, plenty of times, i asked them to say "excuse me" instead of "ha?" and not once did they do it. Not only that, but they had the nerve to laugh @ me. (rolls eyes). If someone "knew" they had to say "excuse me" instead of just "huh" or "what" maybe they would listen more carefully in the first place, s**t! My "parents" dropped dead in 2020 and 2015 and i still think about their refusal to say "excuse me" several times a day. My former "friends", Anthony T. and Dena, and Cory, all had the nerve to refuse to say "excuse me" instead of "huh" or "what".
Yes, they have freedom of speech, but "actions speak louder than words". If they are not willing to do that simple lil thing, then there is no limit to the number of things they are not willing to do for me. And i do not feel like those idiots "cared" about me. meanwhile, they did whatever the f**k they wanted and insisted they were my "friends" and they "helped" me and "cared" about me. f**k that BS! f**k anthony! f**k dena! f**k cory!
and the home depot employees and customers. been working there over four years. only about four times has someone said "excuse me" to me. idiots often said "huh" and "what". rude, uneducated, curt, entitled, stupid ass holes! but "customer always right". plenty of home depot customers don't speak english, don't listen, don't pay attention. loud music and sometimes have to "talk" to someone far away. and they don't wear hearing aids.
s**t!
It must be very difficult going through life getting upset about stuff like that and hanging onto it for such a long time. Have you found anything helpful when it comes to managing your frustration? “Huh” and “what” are frequently used because they adequately convey the meaning the speaker wants to get across. It’s not necessarily about being poorly educated. The way I talk is very different from the way I write academic papers.

i tell myself that precious lil "people" have "freedom of speech".
"pick your battles" is good advice, but some annoying lil dipshits pick ALL the battles.
"thin line between love and hate". love and hate are not opposites. they are very similar. so when i hate something/someone too much, i think about how "hate" is not a good/bad thing and "love" is not good/bad either. so i try not to "love" or "hate" anyone/anything too much. but, "you can do anything you set your mind to" is not correct, b/c i often fail, even @ the easiest things.
“Huh” and “what” are frequently used because they adequately convey the meaning the speaker wants to get across.
that is one possible reason. there could be plenty of different reasons. another reason: b/c the speaker is too arrogant to say "excuse me". another reason: b/c the speaker's vocabulary does not contain "excuse me".
"It’s not necessarily about being poorly educated." Plenty of academically educated precious lil "people" say "huh", "what", "can you" and are otherwise rude, impatient, entitled, self righteous, and self important. (fine). however, all things equal, it appears to me that the more educated someone is, the more often they say "excuse me" or "sorry". (not a representative sample) (not a controlled experiment).
"It must be very difficult going through life getting upset about stuff like that and hanging onto it for such a long time." "very difficult"? granted. however, plenty of things making my stupidass "life" "very difficult": being chinese and dealing with racism, being transsexual and dealing w/homophobia, earning minimum wage and trying to pay for s**t, being exhausted all the time, PTSD, clinical depression, autism.

Now that was an entertaining read. you are getting in your stride, here. Excuse me, but this is praise.
Seinfeld did a bit on "Excuse me?" when someone is a "low talker." His punchline was "You should be saying, 'Excuse YOU,' (because the other person is not talking loud enough to hear).
Perhaps "excuse me" is falling out of fashion? I wonder when was the last time I heard it. I think you do hear it more down in the South than up in Liberal cities, where no one has any patience with politeness.
I think some people are leery of saying "Excuse me" because it opens up the possibility of a rude response, such as "No, I don't excuse you," or "If only you COULD be excused" and things like that. There are more possibilities than with a simple "Please" or "Thank you."

I remember one of my primary school teachers detuning students from being overly polite, although I'm not sure why.
His response to "I beg your pardon" was "Dogs beg!"
"Excuse me" was a request for permission to leave the classroom, and "Pardon me" got the reply "You're not on death row"
I tend to only use "Huh?" as a shorthand for "That didn't make sense" and only use "What" if I'm angry.
I'll often use "Répétez, s'il vous plaît" if I misheard something, or if impatient "¿Que?"

I am not sure about that teacher, that seems strange. Maybe it was a different era. These days, teachers I know would only be thrilled, if a student showed any courtesy. They would be over the moon.
*I bet that if compact-ample-unique-man clocked in at Home Depot one day and everyone was super-polite, saying, "Excuse me?" and "Thank you, Sir," he would be over the moon. Maybe. Or, maybe it would irritate him and he would think that they were mocking him in some fashion, or being supercilious, or weird. I have a feeling he wouldn't like it.
