I came across this http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A5200011 and wonder if it is a genuine reflection of life in the US. Too complex...

Pretty accurate breakdown, although I would say that in a full service restaurant 15 - 20% owuld be the norm. Ten percent would be a pretty cheap tip.

In a hotel, I generally leave the maid $5 a day (you leave it in the room when you check out).

It's not as complicated as it seems.

In the US, it is customary to tip the waiter ten percent of the breakfast, lunch, or dinner that you are served.

Make that 15% for average service. Twenty percent is the norm for excellent service (or if you're just feeling generous).

I'd imagine that if they have to rely on the charity of the paying public ther're hungry enough to eat it larsenjw92286.

I usually just double the tax (which is 8.25% in California) and round up or down from there depending on how happy I am following. I used to be a waiter, so I know how hard it is. Thats a double edged sword though, and usually leaves me rewarding good waiters and waitresses with extra good tips and punishing the ones that angerd me for whatever reason.

I just do fifteen percent. Standard and also easy to calculate: take ten percent, halve it, and add on the half.
