How does one go about ending conversation with another person?

I can go up to a person I know and say hello to them, and maybe exchange a few words, but I can never figure out how to terminate things. Saying goodbye straight out seems so blunt.

I had to think about it.

I normally say "Well...I have to go now" because its always true, even if I just want to go because I'm bored or done. The other person almost always says Okay, or Bye, or something along that lines then I say "Goodbye."

It will be interesting to hear what others have to say.

Im not really sure either people lose interest or it ends up awkward and I have to ask "Are we done here?" But ya other times if they are really annoying I just walk away. I've gotten better though and am saying "Have a good X" day, night, whatever for X.

Whenever I talk to my friends(take note that we tend to joke and fool around alot),we just say,"Well,I'm tired of talking to you,so BYE!"But when talking to other people I just say,"I have to go now,Bye."

My problem is that in the case of aquaintances or people I have just met, I am usually ready to bail out long before they are. I find that if I am required to be there, like on a break at work or something, then I can just hang out and the conversation will eventually end naturally.
The problem only arrises when I know I can leave, and I can see no reason for me to stick around.

Some people are just clueless about when someone wants to end a conversation. I notice this with NT's... aspies don't tend to have this problem. I think it is because aspies notice things that NT's don't.

I just say - gotta go...

I usually say I have to go, and explain why. I'm pretty honest, too...

"Gotta go. I'm getting tired and don't want to crash my car driving home."

"Well, i'm gonna check and see is -X's name- is hangning around. I haven't seen him in awhile/he'll be pissed if I don't say hi/he owes me money and I have to break his legs."

And of course there's always the old reliable:

"Look, I really have to pee."

I have the same problem. I used to have terrible trouble with this.

Usually I just say I have to go, but I still have problems.

5 quick ways of ending conversation speedily if you're in a real jam. Only use in case of emergency:

1. "Hey, are you still like using your spleen? You're not attached to it or anything are you?"

2. "Who do you think is better? Captain Kirk or Admiral Janeway?"

3. "For each $300 investment, you're guaranteed a return of up to 2000%. It's guaranteed!"

4. "I have always loved you but would you consider changing genders?"

5. "Bye"

I tend to be fairly blunt when ending conversations. Something usual would be "I need to go and do some things and I will talk to you later sometime." Then I just leave, no matter who I'm talking to or what their reaction is. Most people don't appreciate that too much but many of those who know me at least moderately well have gotten used to it.

I have trouble ending conversations as well. It' hard to know what to say to end it.

"I have to go . . ." Sounds pretty good. Just have to hope they don't ask why.

I'm completely unable to end conversations, I rely on the other party to know when they're done.

Obviously, the inherent problem with this approach is that I can get stuck for a very long time if the other person has a high boredom threshold and can tolerate the occasional grunt/yeah/no/dunno from me! :)
