What's your opinion of social media?

Social media seems like the epitome of NT-land. You just post whatever you want and hope other people notice and "favorite" or "like" or do whatever regarding your post. The point seems to be simply to post whatever you think of regarding whatever is going on in your life at that moment, and I don't see how that's fun or interesting. I have a Twitter but rarely use it, and Facebook is just overwhelming. The lack of privacy on there is disturbing as well. Is this just me, or do other Aspies feel the same way?

Never took to it... would weird to have like a "picture book" of my life for people to privately browse instead of talking to them. Most people in my family don't really use social media, though.

I ued MySpace & an underground social media site but I didn't really enjoy it. I had very few friends & I never chatted at all with most of em. I never knew what to post & it just seemed boring & pointless.

I use everything like facebook insta snapchat and twitter occasionally . Dont take it serious as i dont talk to the majority of the people on a regular basis .

I have never used social media. As you say, there are some real problems with privacy, not to mention the constant blather. Forums like WP are fine, and I'm setting up my own website and possibly a personal blog as part of it - but that's as far as it goes.

Vanity-book is the scourge of human vices, people see other people posing with their pretty little accomplishments, then they themselves desire those accomplishments, causing an endless cycle of vanity and hedonism. This has ruined lives and families since time immemorial, the bible specifically tells you not to do it.

People are miserable when they measure themselves to others, social media ensures this endless cycle. I tell people all the time, get off of vanity-book, it will make you miserable. Who knows how many hundreds of millions of lives it has ruined.

I have Facebook, Twitter & Instagram, I joined Facebook to make friends. I used to tweets celebrities on Twitter, I stopped doing that, I like Instagram better than Twitter, I don't post too much.

Social websites like WrongPlanet are included in the concept of "Social Media".

Social media is ideal for those of us who have trouble with eye contact and verbal communications. We can pause as long as we want to think of just the right words, and say exactly what we mean.

The downside (?) being that people who might otherwise develop good verbal skills may never do so, having spent their formative years texting abbreviations and limiting their sentences to bursts of 145 characters or less.

Eventually, everyone may end up talking like Aspies ... head down ... no eye contact ... mumbling ... not knowing what to do with their hands if they're not holding a digital device ...

Point taken, but WP is hardly in the same category as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, where people (usually) use their real names, post vast amounts of visual and written information about themselves and 'socialise' constantly. At least that's my understanding of it. WP is more of a specialised discussion forum where members rarely meet each other IRL.

Google+ is ok, as it seems more interest-focused than personal-narrative-obsessed.

I don't think I do Facebook right, since all I have posted since I started the account are 'nature' pictures taken with the smartphone, drawings I made with colored felt-tip pens, and 'likes' of pages from Phys.org, The Scientist, The Science of Us, and other such sites (with an occasional share of Doghouse Diaries, deMilked, or something like that). There are four photos up there that include me, one that is used for an avatar, but the whole thing where you tag other friends and post things you've done together obviously is out of the question. I have two close companions, a sister and my partner of 15 years. Neither one is into Facebook or having their picture taken or parts of their life posted on the internet. I have no casual friends and am not part of any 'circle' of friends.

Early on, I tried liking and commenting on my Facebook friends' walls, but gave up when I realized that it feels way too much like work - and some people post so much personal stuff that I feel weird even looking at it. And since my life consists of 1) spoiling my cat 2) reading 3) thinking 4) drawing 5) walking so I have really got nothing 'personal' to share that they'd relate to. I'm currently unemployed, so don't even have a job to brag or complain about (not that I would anyway, boring). I have quit looking at Facebook and now all I do is share or like the science pages. Even posting drawings or photos felt too much like a performance, as if I were 'showing off', so I quit that as well.

I'm comfortable sticking to forum boards like this one, where it's just threads of discussions.

Social networking media such as Facebook and Twitter seem like too much work to me, plus I think the lack of privacy and, quite honestly, personal security, people are willing to open themselves up to is actually quite insidiously appalling.

I also dislike and am concerned about how, increasingly, there are things you can't even do or take part in if you are not on Facebook or Twitter or similar.

I'll stick to conversations on places like here, rather than join these network-y things.

I can't stand social media.

Since I been posting more on the forum, I been spending less time on Facebook , I don't post personal things & put too many pictures on Facebook. I do go on Instagram, my fave celebrities are on there.

WP is the only 'social media-like' thing that I go on. I avoid all other forums [mainly because of the negativity and the excessive swearing on some of them].

I prefer forums because they're usually dedicated to a certain topic, and we all know how dedicated we are to our special interests, which allows me to spend hours on forums of my interests without getting bored. Facebook and Twitter and the like are just...anything.

And I also hate it how these sites are becoming required for things. Like, really? I don't want to go through the trouble of joining a website just to comment on your page or play a game.

I only frequent forums. I have a Facebook Twitter Instagram and now even a Tumblr but don't do anything with them. I joined FB to find someone originally. I still keep it on in case someone talks to me or I need it for a certain website but I don't really look on it. I hate FB. I signed up for Twitter to get back in contact with someone but I ended up not really talking to them. I just read my fav celeb's pages on occasion..don't tweet that much. I try to tweet more because I feel like I need to enjoy the site as a music enthusiast but I get bored after less than a half hour.
Instagram I forget why I signed up for that maybe for my fav musicians...idk but haven't done a thing with it.
I might get rid of my Tumblr soon. I signed up to message my fav youtuber but he never replied. Sometimes they have good GIFs for me to hoard but that's the only benefit I see on it.

Being an internet frequenter I guess it's easy to join new sites sometimes because the internet has lost its magic over the years. People don't post on message boards like they used to. Some completely "died" others aren't all that active anymore. I feel like a lot of people have moved to Twitter and I hate it.
