I understand using IMs to talk to someone I do not know (at least until I get to know them). However, if someone I know very well insists on communicating via IM, I have to say..."Don't you use the phone anymore?" It is bad enough that I am consistently misunderstood when speaking (i.e. people take things the wrong way). Nevertheless, I even more misinterpreted when I use IM...For the most part, if one wants to be fully understood, vocal inflection is necessary…I know my speech is rather monotone, but one can still hear infection in my voice...I also get tired of typing…:P

I actually like using IM better than the phone. I get nervous on the phone especially since I don't talk very much and I tend to be quiet when I do talk. For me IM is a much less stressful form of communication. But I understand how vocal inflection can be pretty important.

For Skype I have to go through a text conversation with you first before talking to you with my voice, and even then I might need to go through a few chats first. I also like people to state which site they came from so I don't panic if it's a stranger. XD

I ask people do that whenever they IM me, since I can't keep track of everyone I give out my IM handle to. In addition, I am usually in stealth mode, becuase I get tons of creeps from all over the world wanting to 'cyber' w/ me!
