Personally, no one that I'm friends with makes small talk. I'm quiet a lot in public, and no one seems to think less of me. If I'm at a party and have nothing to say, I say nothing, and no one cares or thinks less of me because of it. Now I'm curious, who told you guys that "NTs" think you're weird if you're not constantly making small talk or participating in conversation? Either everyone I know is extremely tolerant, or you all worry and obsess too much about making a mistake. Maybe if you just stop looking so nervous all the time and relax, people well be fine with you. That was my solution, to stop caring. Become as laid back as possible, and don't give a f**k weather or not you've made a mistake, and you've got it made. At least that's what's worked for me. So seriously, are their really people out there who expect you to talk all the time and always be extremely social? I don't know ANY.

Neurotypical.

I talk all the time. Nonstop.

The problem is, I can't gauge a situation to save my life, constantly end up with my foot in my mouth, with people ticked off at me, giving out more information than anyone on the planet would ever be interested in.

Information on NTs:

Well, I thought I was getting it from a core group of people I grew up with. Then I realized we were all in the same boat. There is one person I know... don't talk to her much. I read the news from many, many sources.

I read books on social interaction, body language and psychology. It helps me understand and predict people.

Also, lately I've been asking people questions about their social interactions. Sometimes my questions may seem crazy but if I ask them with enough confidence I think they can be perceived as legitimate.

You're ahead of me. Reading this post pieced together a mystery I've been looking at for a while. My friends don't show direct interest in me, which I just discovered is because I never do small talk.

Funny you say that, a very small number of people ever show direct interest in me. I've always assumed it's because the vibe I give off, you can almost tell by looking at me that I don't think very highly of myself. And I kind of hate talking about myself anyways, it can lead to rambling.

NT's do make small talk, they just don't with people who aren't their friends.
