I know this is weird but people in hallways people are always like "hey man what's up?" I never know how to answer this. Should I be honest and tell them that nothing is up because my life is boring and uninteresting, just say not much, just say hi, ask them what's up or sometimes I try to be sarcastic and say "well obviously I'm sailing the Pacific Ocean" , when it is very clear that I'm walking around the hall to my next class therefore it's bit of a dumb question. I just get awkward when people ask me this..well I do when people talk to me in general but even more for this. Does anyone else feel like this over this stupid question?

I usually just say "not much" in an awkward, quiet voice. Not the greatest way to handle it, I know, but yeah - it sure is awkward.
"How are you?" is even worse for me. I don't often want to say "fine," because usually it's not true and even when it is it just feels strange and awkward because then you have to say "fine, thanks" and ask after them, which I also find awkward and time-consuming. I usually equivocate with "busy," or occasionally say that I'll know after my experiment turns out.

What's up, What it Do, Watta up wit cha self are all terms for the same thing.

They are easy ice breakers. If someone says what's up to you what they are really doing is acknowledging your presence.

Just do something.

You can say Sup back to them. You can say, Nah much nah much, you know. You can say nothing and give a person the nod.

Just don't give them a long winded explanation, don't close off your body language, and Defiantly do not be sarcastic. When people say what up, they are being polite and social. Nobody likes an ass.

When life's boring I just answer "not much."

Yeah I do - sometimes I get so flustered that I answer literally (the ceiling, the sky, the upper floors of the building).. it's not that I just blurt out the literal answer, but it comes to mind and then I can't think of anything else in time, and I feel I need to say something.. now my friends know I do that and just treat it as a bad joke, which is fine, I tell plenty of them too :D

I never know how to answer this question. Sometimes I like to be literal and answer with "the sky" or "clouds", but usually that just gets funny looks

I usually just say "not much" or assume it's a rhetorical question.

I think "what's up" is just another way of saying "hi", but I usually end up saying nothing or not much.

"Not much." is pretty standard. "Hey." is my other standby, as it means even less.

What I will not stand for, regardless of the social cost, is, "Sup." If they're ALREADY a frickin' contraction involved in what you're saying, then please do not abbreviate it further, especially if you're going to have to make up new words that sound intellectually devoid.

Incidentally, I resist even further, "Kay." Okay, we have the word okay. Two syllables, four letters. Not too unwieldy for...anyone in any situation. So okay becomes O.K. We have now abbreviated a two syllable four letter word, and done so with just two letters from the alphabet. So, O.K. becomes, "kay." What did the "O" do to you? Did it harm your family or something? Did we really need to abbreviate an abbreviation? Come on!

I'm going to be an English teacher. Can you tell?

I don't somehow because I'm used it now.

Its definitely an annoying question. I've tried most of the aforementioned things at one time or another. I find that humor or sarcasm usually just confuses people, and they're almost never looking for a literal answer. Now I just respond to it with a automatic nod and/or 'Hey', without thinking about it. Actually, that's how I tend to respond to most irrelevant communication directed at me. Pretty soon people just learn to avoid me altogether, and it all works out for the best.
