Today some random guy said I dress like a hipster. I buy my clothes at bargain prices and usually wear whatever is comfy. So why the hell should I be worried? I don't wear geek glasses nor frown at everything & everyone all the time....so all of a sudden I get called a hipster!

Don't take offense at this but...

In my opinion, male hipsters usually look like this description:
Messy hair
Sunglasses/Geek Glasses
Frown
Pilot Jacket
T-shirt/Sweater
Torn-up jeans
Sneakers
Very Tall

Female hipsters usually look like this description:
Long dark Hair
Geek Glasses
Devilish Smile
Tweed Jacket
Blouse
Torn-up jeans
Sneakers
Very Tall

Sounds like me, except I'm short and don't wear glasses.

I don't think you should worry about it. Hipsters are people who want to be seen as having good taste and an original style without actually having their own style or taste. So they follow trends. These trends change constantly. So the hipster look changes constantly.

If you have your own taste and your own style, this might occasionally overlap with the popular hipster style as trends change, but this won't last long. And if you're confidant about your own style and interests, you probably won't even notice until someone points it out.

And most of the time, when people get accused of being hipsters, the accuser is a hipster who is jealous or insecure in some way. The term gets thrown around a lot in a nonsensical manner. It's all pretty ridiculous.

I always thought it was more of a mindset than a fashion sense.

Wait, is "hipster" some kind of negative thing?
I've worn clothes like that for years, now I feel paranoid. :?

I wouldn't want that label, or any other label, put on me.

I do consider myself to be artsy, though.

I sort of think of Jack Kerouac as a hipster, or Bob Dylan back in this folk days

I dunno; the whole point of hipsterism is that the look changes every week.

Except Jack Kerouac and Bob Dylan
were more hippie than hipster.

Hipsters basically have well-fitting clothes that follow basic trends (usually tight jeans and giant sunglasses). A lot of them buy at bargain prices too, though this is a trend as well...

don't worry about it, the person probably didn't mean it as an insult. it just means that you fit in. Trends do change, and the most important thing is that you be yourself.

I have finally decided to come to terms with the fact that I may, in fact, be a hipster--even though it's not really a label I want.
