is it wrong to send a yahoo or msn instant message to someone just to say hi?

everytime i say hi to someone over yahoo or msn, they reply with stuff like "hi! is something up?" or "what is it?". i just say "just saying hi." then they get all confused because they think i have something important to say or ask them.

I get that too. Even more confusing (for them), I often just send a guestion mark, meaning, "Are you there? Are you bored? Feel like having a conversation about nothing in particular to kill some time?"

I'm on the other side of that. I'm one of those people who doesn't talk to you unless I actually feel like talking, so if you send me a 'hi' and I'm actually chatty, be prepared for an entire conversation. :P
