I'm unsure whether to make peace with this and stop trying or look into it more. I have managed to secure long term interactions based on a common activity such as talking about cars with someone who owns a salvage yard, as mutual participants in a political demonstrations or interest in a statistics program back when I was in school. Even my marriage is good, but still an arrangement where "I do a good job". Friendships just don't happen, no matter where I look or try. I wonder if I'm wasting my time. Perhaps having arrangements based on mutual activities is as close as I can get.

Actually that is what modern friendships are. Once you are out of school "forever friends" & "best buddy pal around forever" friendships don't happen unless you get extremely lucky and marry a soulmate. Its all about arrangements and what one person can do for anotehr and mutual activities. True friendship is rare for anybody these days, so don't feel alone.
