At various times I've been concerned that changes to my diet or health may be causing me to have bad breath. But since we can't smell our own breath, and it's not polite to ask others how your breath smells, how do people determine when they have bad breath?

I saw a commercial a long time ago where a woman in an office placed her hand palm inwards about four inches outside of her mouth, then breathed quickly into it and took a sniff once the breath had bounced off her hand. It works most of the time.

Licking your finger/back of your hand and leaving it dry then sniffing it works. I've tried it.

I know it seems weird but it works.

Ask the dentist.

Seriously! You have cleanings every six months, but they can probably get your insurance to cover a quick consultation in between, and they'll likely have insight into what could be causing bad breath.

Did you know that many dentists rinse with mouthwash between patients?

NYGOI, that is the thing that I was going to say. Stop stealing my thoughts!

The dentist has to give you his/her professional iopinion. They are not paid to be polite.

I heard of the back of the hand thing. Though you should wash your hand, as that might smell too.
