What's the purpose of tipping percentage?
Why should the pricing choices of a restaurant affect how much tip my server deserves?

I'm assuming that the idea isn't how much the server actually receives, as much as it is how much you are willing to give. Hence, the amount you pay above what would normally be your bill is what's counted. If you are buying expensive dinner, you have more to give.

I never really bothered with tipping percentages.

I figure, if I go to steak n shake and pay $15 for two meals, the tip should be like $3.

If I go to Olive Garden and pay $40 for two meals, the tip should be more like $5-8.

Agreed. Mine is completely dependent on the service. That's who the tip goes to!

Funny you say that, since your $3 tip on a $15 order is 20%.....and your $8 tip on a $40 order is also 20%.

This I believe too. If the waiter/waitress gave crappy service, then s/he is going to get a crappy tip. I think a tip should be an incentive to give the customer the best possible service. I don't feel bad about it either, because here in the state of Michigan I know that if the waiter/waitress gets to keep their tips, then the business can pay them a minimum wage of like $2.50/hr, but that plus the tips must add up to minimum wage (for typical workers it's $7.40/hr), otherwise they have to pay them more per hour.

If you can afford to spend a lot on yourself, then you can afford to spend more on others. That's the idea, anyway.
