I've recently been accused of doing and saying certain things for attention (telling someone I have AS, OCD, certain behaviors I can't help).

CORRECTION: Attention is the absolute last thing I want.

It's frustrating that some of the people I felt comfortable around think this, but I'm tying to just block them out and not let it bother me. I'm picky enough about who I tell these things to, but some things are obvious, and I can't help them.

Anybody else heard this before?

Yeah, lots of people that don't understand say that. Since you don't fit the norm, they think you do it deliberately.

And the worst part is that the norm is usually to be quite attention seeking.

I have to admitt. I become very attention seeking with partners that I have had. I don't know what happens, just something comes over me and I feel like I am not in control anymore. In can be some what damaging in relationships to act immature.

How insulting isn't that? We specials try to be normal and what we (mostly) get is a boatload of s**t from the normal people who is praising those of them who are trying to be special... :?

That's what's happening when a world is ruled by emotions instead of logic, Mars anyone?

A lot of people don't like the idea of aspergers. People close to me just don't talk about it and it's obvious they think it's a load of s**t.

Definitely. I'm actually going through an issue involving this right now. I don't like holding up my AS as a reason for my behavior, but it is the reason. I am getting help and I am doing better, but she just won't understand it.

I think that's easily the most wide-spread reaction to AS: you're doing it for attention, or using it as an excuse.

On the upside, that means loads of people with AS have had the experience, and can commiserate with you. :D

Bingo.

i'm sure a lot of us are told we are attention-seeking for that reason alone--just for being different.

The other day my mum was complaining about how I stay up til the early hours of the morning then sleep all day (much as I am doing tonight by still being here, LOL), so I said that a lot of people here do exactly the same, and she implied that I was just doing it to copy you guys or summat!
