I have a group of friends that LOVES sarcasm. Almost everything that is said is sarcastic in some way, toward somebody. We all understand each other, just about 100% of the time, but I think that I have trouble with sarcasm from people outside of my group of friends.

I've made blunders at work because I didn't understand someone's sarcasm. At times that I'm talking with other people one-on-one I find that I've made some sort of mistake in the conversation because I didn't follow their sarcasm. Sometimes I even hear or overhear something that I KNOW to be sarcasm, but I'll still second guess myself thinking "what if s/he's really serious?" I really have trouble distinguishing sometimes.

Who else shares my sarcasm trouble?
How does this work for you?
More or Less?

I sometimes have trouble coming up with an appropriately sarcastic reply, but otherwise not much.

Not too much trouble, only if they say something plausible or subtle in an ordinary tone of voice.

My reply was Absolutely. The whole sarcasm thing greatly interests me because I have a serious struggle with it myself. And I share your sarcasm trouble for sure, in many of the same ways.

I socialise a lot with other Aspies and there isn't any sarcasm there and I get along very well anyway. Communication might be complicated in some ways sometimes, but sarcasm isn't a reason. But yes when socialising with NT's I've a serious problem. There's a lot of sarcasm, indeed it's pretty much the order of the day, at work, and when I'm at church or on outings/nights out through church. There's a lot of sarcasm in the Scottish culture which doesn't suit me. But blunders at work include getting into trouble and being up before the boss because I offended someone, because I felt that the culture of the workplace required me to produce some sort of sarcasm/banter. Any time I've attempted, though, I have offended the other personto a greater or lesser degree, and the incident I speak of was really quite serious.

As for understanding the sarcasm of others, I have a real struggle too. I lose count of the amount of times people pointed out that they were being sarcastic, or joking, or not serious. I am just not "getting it". And no matter how difficult sarcasm is for me, perhaps because of our culture other people insist on keeping going with it anyway.

So I'd say my problem with sarcasm is a pretty big impairment. I am wondering, is Wisconsin a part of America where there's a relatively high amount of sarcasm? I haven't been to America but have talked to so many Americans online and I found that the more liberal an area, the more sarcasm they used (and therefore I struggled). The more conservative an area, the less sarcasm. I ask because Wisconsin is a pretty liberal state.

I voted sometimes. I think I have gotten better at it and now I can guess that someone is or not. It's harder online though.

Because of my dry sense of humor and monotone voice most people have a difficult time determinaing how I mean things. I have trouble with them, and they have trouble with me.

OP, I am like you.

I use sarcasm. I get my friends' sarcasm. Otherwise it goes woosh, and I get told to get a sense of humor stop taking everything so seriously etc. Which is blehy, because I know I have a sense of humour and I don't take life too seriously. So I don't listen to them :P

I think it might have something to do with the fact I'm aware what sarcastic things friends are likely to use, and hence it's easier to spot it. Or maybe I pick up signals from them that a sarcastic reply is on its way soon. I dunno why exactly, but I'm definitely a lot more capable with people I know well.

In my online and offline social groups, nearly 100% of the comments made are sarcastic in some way. In fact, I struggle more there to figure out exactly what is to be taken seriously, which has gotten me into awkward situations.

When I have a conversation with someone, it almost gets to the point where we're always saying exactly the opposite of what we really mean.

I have stocked many phrases from shows like Family Guy that I quote when necessary. Unfortunately this gets me into trouble at times. Just today I was talking to a person who takes everything completely literally all the time (possibly an Aspie), and I said, "Were you dropped on your head as a baby too? :P" after they made a spelling mistake. The response was, "Gtfo..." followed by a log out. Oops. :|

I'm pretty much a master at using sarcasm, but sometimes have trouble on the receiving end. In other words, I tease brilliantly, but I'm terrible with getting teased. I can give it, but I can't take it.

Normally, I save my sarcasm for people I know will react appropriately. That way, I'd have a better idea of when to expect a sarcastic reponse.

((((hugs))))

I don't think sarcasm really causes me any problems, unless the sarcast is someone I have never before met. Certainly, I have absolutely no difficulties with regards to recognising written sarcasm.

While writing this, I looked up sarcasm in my dictionary because I'm not quite sure what it is, even though I usually can recognise its instances. It wasn't helpful, telling me sarcasm is "a bitter gibe or taunt." I'm pretty good at these when I need to be, but I'm sceptical of the quality of this definition.

I can easily detect sarcasm, but I don't always respond the right way to em.
