My reply was Absolutely. The whole sarcasm thing greatly interests me because I have a serious struggle with it myself. And I share your sarcasm trouble for sure, in many of the same ways.
I socialise a lot with other Aspies and there isn't any sarcasm there and I get along very well anyway. Communication might be complicated in some ways sometimes, but sarcasm isn't a reason. But yes when socialising with NT's I've a serious problem. There's a lot of sarcasm, indeed it's pretty much the order of the day, at work, and when I'm at church or on outings/nights out through church. There's a lot of sarcasm in the Scottish culture which doesn't suit me. But blunders at work include getting into trouble and being up before the boss because I offended someone, because I felt that the culture of the workplace required me to produce some sort of sarcasm/banter. Any time I've attempted, though, I have offended the other personto a greater or lesser degree, and the incident I speak of was really quite serious.
As for understanding the sarcasm of others, I have a real struggle too. I lose count of the amount of times people pointed out that they were being sarcastic, or joking, or not serious. I am just not "getting it". And no matter how difficult sarcasm is for me, perhaps because of our culture other people insist on keeping going with it anyway.
So I'd say my problem with sarcasm is a pretty big impairment. I am wondering, is Wisconsin a part of America where there's a relatively high amount of sarcasm? I haven't been to America but have talked to so many Americans online and I found that the more liberal an area, the more sarcasm they used (and therefore I struggled). The more conservative an area, the less sarcasm. I ask because Wisconsin is a pretty liberal state.
