There's this friend at school who I've known since I was about 6 years old. Her birthday is soon and she reminded me of it, I think she expects me to get her something. I have no problem with that considering how long we've known each other etc, but I really don't know that to get.

My first thought is chocolates, but is that too obvious? I'm not sure what else I can get without spending loads of money.

Any ideas?

It really depends on the girl in question. Perhaps if you could share a little here about what she likes, what she likes to do, that sort of thing. I would find chocolates for a birthday to be a bit weird, but I'm no expert on this sort of thing--maybe it's normal.

I have an idea - - most females like something nice for their room, such as scented candles (always popular!), a pretty potted plant (purple hyacinths are quite easy to care for, or an African violet) is a favourite gift.

At some bookstore/gift shops you can buy an art print in a matted frame (very reasonably priced too) - you could pick out one she'd like. Or, a vintage hardcover book is memorable. How about a fancy container of tea, maybe with a box of European cookies or biscotti? Could you find a themed keychain (gift/jewellery store item), something you know she really likes (i.e., horses, dolphins, celestial, castles)?

I think you might be right....chocolates are nice but can be sort-of obvious for a gift, even impersonal. But really nice you're thining of her; I'm sure she'll like whatever you choose :) Sometimes a nice card is the best.

Wow, you are good at this!

How about some music she likes? You could burn her a cd with lots of different stuff you think she'd like - maybe put some new stuff on there that she hasn't heard.
