I hate autism stereotypes. I have asperger's. Just because I am obsessed with several topics, does not mean that I won't every settle down on one thing. And BLACK PEOPLE CAN HAVE ASPERGER'S!

Yeah I hate them too. I'm half indian and I have autism. I'm pretty sure I got it from my dad, who was indian.

There are quite a few stereotypes around. Like the maths one and the liking trains and all that bollocks.
I don't know any one (and I know quite a few aspies too) who exactly fits the stereotype, at all.

I have Asperger Syndrome and I am a musician, author, music teacher student, and a philosopher. I never cared too much about stereotypes. The very definition is enough proof of the prevalent human ignorance and the need to put people into boxes. People are afraid of the unknown, that is why they have to make up little stories for how the original people supposedly are, so that they are not unknown to them anymore and no longer a threat.

I am writing a book on Asperger Syndrome that deals with just that subject, among others. I am open to contributions if anyone wants to share a story or experience. You will be credited, or remain anonymous; depending on what you wish. If anyone are interested, drop me a PM!

One of the stereotypes I have come across most often is that we're all good at math. Oho, no no!

As for the math one, I enjoy math and am studying it in college... but I'm not very good with number crunching. I can set up a problem or discuss mathematical concepts, but I cut a lot of corners on arithmetic.

As for stereotypes, I am certain they exist for a reason (i.e. Neurotypical types trying to generalize a big, foreign "them"), but who ever said they were "accurate?" Granted, I tend to utilize stereotypes for other big, foriegn "thems" as well. Normal people mostly.

Math was always my worst subject in school. The Stereotypes are wrong.

Yeah, I've wondered about that "all autistics are white" thing, too.

I hate that stereotype that we're obsessed with trains. I mean, trains?

Oh please, stereotypes aren't based on fear and ignorance, they're practically required to understanding the world imagine if you had to look at every single new fork as though you'd never seen this weird contraption before and discover you can eat with it rather than assume long with four tines, its a fork. Stereotypes are sometimes given more credit than they deserve, but we do need them.

The fact that people say that AS people are great at maths is a load of crap.

People in my social circles thought Asperger's meant violent mood swings before I showed up just because the only other aspie they knew was like that.

They neglected the fact that the guy was also bi-polar. Commence head shaking.

lol. That's funny because when I read that, I shook my head right before I read 'commence head shaking'.

yea that's stupid. I'm good at algebra and the basic stuff but when it comes to calculus i suck and geometry.
yea but it's not their faults they are ignorant . and the people who do those stereotypes are just trying to study autism.

-Autistic people don't have emotions
-Autistic people have overaverage intelligence and excell in math and science
-Autistic children have obsesions with trains and dinosaurs
-Autistic children stare at ceiling fans and have an obsession with closing doors

I'm not even mad I'm actually LMAO about how uninformed and ignorant these people are. I believe only an autistic person can answer the real questions and evrything else is just assumptions.

But can we answer the real questions. How would we know what's normal and what's not???? So there's a limitation to autism research right there.

Yeah I dont know if I would be good at math if I did not have non verbal disorder.

One of the only stereotypes that is true is that not all asians are smart.

Haven't you ever seen Rose Red? Clearly autistics have obsessions with dollhouses too for girls.

In all seriousness, I too have noticed people use those stereotypes and it pisses me off to no end. I just love how they assume they know what the autistic is thinking and why they think it. I mean clearly autistics must be mindless robots from outer space in their eyes.
