For some reason I enjoy looking through my friends' wallets. No I don't intend on stealing anything or memorize their credit card numbers. I feel like the only way I can really get to know people that interest me greatly is to do weird things like this. I like looking at their driver's licenses alot for this reason. I always ask permission beforehand of course so they aren't weirded out by this anymore than they already are. Heh.

If I work really hard, I can think of excuses to ask to see specific a item.

You're getting carded at a bar and you start a conversation about how dorky everyone looks in those pictures...

Women are more likely to carry pictures of the family and are happy to show them.

Other than that, I can't see a way to look through someone's wallet.

Whoa, I love going through wallets! I've always done that, if they'll let me get away with it!

I never take anything.

I know or knew several neurotypical people who did this. Never took anything or the like. It sounds like a commonplace occurrence to me.

Eek! I've caught a few NT friends doing this, some planning on stealing I'm sure, others, probably for the same reason as yourself....and I've freaked out completely on them. I'm incredibly paranoid as it is, and catching people going through anything of mine, for any reason, is a surefire way to get me to back off and never trust you again.

I've never ever heard of this practice. I'd probably get a little sketched out if someone asked me for my wallet... But on the other hand, one could probably learn quite a bit about me. I've stashed a lot of crap over the years in my wallet (I've had the same one since high school); I imagine I could spend an hour at least telling someone the stories behind the contents.

Wow! Oddly enough - I like having my wallet looked through. It was actually a custom I encountered in Venezuela. Suitors surrender their wallets to their date's younger siblings for inspection. Money was far far less interesting than any pictures or phone numbers that they might find. It was as you say a getting-to-know you kind of thing. The little sister would look at all the things she found in my wallet and comment or ask questions or tease me about them. I enjoyed it - and it was very flattering.
