I think I'm just not a fan of Pop in general... even if it's Japanese.

Are there any Japanese Bands squarely in the Progressive Rock genre?

I'm betting that the Japanese interpretation of Prog-Rock is going to be pretty awesome...

Boredoms / Hanatarash
Yellow Magic Orchestra
Ruins / Koenji Hyakkei
Fushitsusha / Keiji Haino
Osamu Kitajima
The Gerogerigegege
Zeni Geva
Melt Banana

Ruins / Koenji Hyakkei may be the band you'd like, but I also wouldn't rule out Boredoms, or the singer's side project Hanatarash either. Melt Banana are essentially an experimental take on Hardcore with piercing asian female vocals. --They go into strange dub infested breakdowns.

Zeni Geva is experimental Death Metal with some pretty strange time signatures, and Kazuyuki K Null (guitarist/Singer) also has an ambient side project. Good luck finding anything by Osamu Kitajima, though there is a track available for download on WFMU's Blog. THe rest of the bands above are fairly experimental/ Avante Garde. You may want to google them to find out more about them, though.

Due to youtube deleting the AAA music video I have found an alternative source for them.

Yes, I would count them because they are still Japanese Music Culture and any type of Japanese can be posted here for future references.

I'm also a Dir en grey fan.

It's amazing how far they've come, not only since they began the band, but since I started liking them.

They were actually contemplating a break-up when I first heard their songs. Then they start touring in North America and Europe, and they were surprised at the great reception they got. Kaoru (one of their guitarists) actually said in an interview that we non-Japanese fans are the reason they're still performing together.

It made me feel really happy when I read that.
