I have an extraordinarily strong response to music, as well as an innate ability to follow its structures and patterns.
I also have difficulties processing speech.
Does anyone else process music better than speech?

I also process music much better than speech - I frequently have trouble converting speech into comprehensible words - and have a very strong reaction to music. I am not a musician but am musical (I was a classically trained singer as a kid) and a natural mimic. I seem to process sound differently to speech, with speech, intonation, pitch, accent and speed are what I notice and then have to pick out meaning in real time once I identify it as such and add context... :? Its frustrating and tiring.

How are you comparing the two? I don't see listening to music as "processing" it in the same sense that I process speech, but I think music can sometimes convey emotions a lot more effectively.

Speech for me is just another set of sounds - however awash with words/syllables which are indistinct or sound alike. Hence it has to be processed after it is heard to extract meaning from it, and put in context for it to make sense. That is where the problem lies for me, doing this on the fly.

I am a musician, and find it easier to actually *listen* to music and be able to hear it than to speech. It's also less frustrating - maybe it's because I don't know that I'm not picking up something in the music? I don't know. I'm also attuned to harmonies and 'learn' the main harmonies in a piece before 'learning' the melody. (By 'learn' I mean get to know the piece and be able to hum along / recall it.)

I have to say though, that I agree that music can convey emotions more effectively than speech, although I find it's most of the time rather than just some of the time. Also pieces evoke certain memories for me because I will 'learn' a piece for a long while before seriously listening to anything else, and the pieces bring back memories of what was happening at the time when I was 'learning' them.

I'm sensitive to rhythm in music, but I don't know what you mean by "process." I process speech better than lyrics.
