In gym class we did something today that I was absolutely dreading...

A swimming unit.

Myself and water don't get along. I can stand in it, I can shower in it, but put me in a pool, thats a different story.

Since we had to get 30 minutes of pyhsical activity our class played water polo, on the deep end of the pool.

I have always found the feeling of floating in water to be very disorienting since I have nothing on my feet to give me the feeling of being on solid ground, and today was no exception. As we played the game, I was getting splashed and kicked constantly by other people, which was only making things worse.

I had to spend most of my avaliable mental energy to trying to keep myself afloat and upright since I was unable to rely upon my own biofeedback to keep myself oriented properly in the pool.

When we were done, and we got out of the pool, I was mentally drained. I had to walk down a long hallway to get to the locker room and I found myself stumbling along like a drunk person and nearly crashing into the walls(magic I know now how you feel sometimes...) The thing I want to do the most was just to lay down and close my eyes, but I can't since I got a class to go to next.

These are the most hellish P.E. classes I have ever heard about. Running, yoga, now swimming... Can't they make their minds? How can you be good at any of these sports when they change them so often and don't let you practice?

I know what you mean and I sympathize with you. In your place I would just lie down on some bench or wherever, even if only for a couple of minutes. After all, being tired after a P.E. class is nothing abnormal and makes a good explanation, should anyone ask.

I used to be afraid of water, but I think I was just being too influenced by Arthur then. now, I'm no longer afraid.

I'm quite the opposite. I love the feel of water against my skin and would pick swimming over running any time. Not having something solid under me means it's the closest I come to flying, so I get a sort of thrill out of that, especially when swimming in deep parts. But it may be just because I am a good swimmer and am confident that I won't drown.

I also hate swimming and am not good at it all, at least when I do not have a mask and snorkel on. I don't get disoriented at all, it just takes me a lot of energy to stay afloat if I have my head out of the water. I am extremely glad that I don't have to do drownproofing, which is where you have to stay afloat for about fifteen minutes with your hands and ankles bound. It used to be required for graduation at some colleges up until the eighties; my dad had to do it.

I do not particularly enjoy swimming, as I feel unsafe without my glasses and without terra firma under my feet. Regarding drownproofing, I have a question. I did not swim recently, but when I did as a kid and teen, I was able to stay afloat by lying on my back, without moving any limbs. I would sometimes lie on water effortlessly for several minutes. However, I haven't seen anyone else doing that. I wonder if everyone is buoyant in this position, or maybe only kids?

Thats one of the first thing everyone learns in a water safety class. The dead man float is what its called and everyone can do that.

I envy all of you who are good at swimming. I have had many bad experiences in the pool.

One event that happened at least 22 years ago (I can't date it, so it happened before August 1982, probably June or July 1982) was that my mom took me to the city's outdoor swimming pool. I can remember playing in the kiddie pool there, then going over to the other pool while my mom watched me. Not realizing that the water in the pool where I was standing was about 5 feet deep, I hoped in. I remember sinking to the bottom, opening my eyes and seeing the legs of people as they waded around the pool.

Next thing I remember was that a burly guy with a huge salt and pepper colored beard was holding me, asking me over and over again if I was alright, and myself not answering him, with my mom looking over his right shoulder.

In January 1993, my "special ed" gym class that I was in was doing a swimming unit. One day, one of the kids that was in my class got disoriented while try to do an underwater manuver in about 4 feet of water, and started to drown. My teacher had to jump in the pool to pull him up.

The human body on the whole, is roughly 2% less dense than water, so floating on the back is easily accomplished.

My PE class is called "active lifestyles" and is a requirement of everyone going to oshkosh if they want to graduate from there with some kind of degree. The class is a little of everything, so each session we do something different.

I love swimming, I probably suck at it though, heh.

Ihated school swimming as you get bossed around and told to do things you don't want.

I like to be in the water and do what I like. The worst part about it is getting out, it's annoying drying off and stuff.
