Even better yet, look up Dieselboy -6ixth Session and listen to tracks like 3, 7, and 16 to hear how much the beats can vary.

What software did you use to produce the song ?

Pretty cool track, vry dark. The drum beat was a bit too off and repetitive though. But i like it :)

Yeah, the beat needed swing to it, usually drumwork like that is swung out to have a bit more life, hop, and bounce. Usually the drums are a lot more chaotic, breaky, etc. - I would have loved to do more with it but like I said, I had sh-- to work with. As for the program I used to make this, it was Reason. I'm thinking about getting my hands on Absynth one of these days soon to make better sickbass with - the bassline I had in there wasn't too bad but still, I could do much more twisted and enthralling stuff on there than I can with Reason's Subtractor or Maelstrom synths.

Hah a Reason boy too ! Nice one.

Yeah Reason does limit itself by not allowing VSTi/DXi. But have you tried layering the bassline with more than one synth, adding Scream Box and adding Sub Bass ?

Lol, I had a laundry list stacked on that bassline. Let me take a look...UN-16 unison...D-11 foldback distortion...Scream 4...CF-101 chorus/flanger...COMP-01 compression...M-Class EQ...RV7000 reverb, that's 6 modules I had on it. Yeah, most of em aren't tuned up real high, I was just real particular though on how the sound came out. As for the sub-end, I did clone it with a clean channel - that's how it was able to deliver that much low-end without cracking up. My only concern about the final edit is that while I didn't mind the bass being up kinda high, it matches a lot of the mixes I have in my car now, I think the piano line kinda got burried under the rest of the track and I could have brought the highs up maybe just one or two dB.

Let me ask you though, just because I'm still not real knowledgeable on Reason. Do you think it could hack a bassline sound anything like this ( http://www.breakbeat.co.uk/player/player.asp?ID=8203 ) ? I've never been able to get that kind of, what would I call it, that sort of metallic callibration on anything. Yeah, it's a really old track, but I think I need to learn how to do sounds like that if I really wanna sicken my tracks up right.

I thought you would mention that some proper songs for Halloween are "Hollaback Girl" (sorry for the obsession,) and "Disco Duck." However, I could be misreading the thread. Who knows?

No, this is just me doing some shameless self-promotion, nothing else :P

I'm sorry. Funny music is good for Halloween, though.

erm, actually ive only had Reason for about 2 weeks

I was listening to "Hard Noise", is that the bass sound you are referring to ? Sorry im not much of a DnB listener.

I just had a play. Try Subtractor synth, set one OSC to Sine Wave and the other Square both at octave 2. The Square gives you that metallic edge i think, if i am in fact understanding what you want. And then on that Hard Noise song it sounds like the notes kidna lift at the end, so play around with modulation of the wave. Ive uploaded somethign here, not sure if thats what you want.

Also no need to flood the sound with loads of reverb/chorus/flanger. Kinda weakens the the hard hitting beats  Unless that was what you were aiming for.

You didn't even have to but thanks. I guess I'm just trying to understand the theory as to what kinds of sounds are made how

Well, I think mostly that was just to add volume and smoothing. The kind of feel I love is stuff where it's dark and grimey sound-pallatewise but is real smoothed out and liquid as far as the flow of the beats. In otherwords yeah, it's kinda intentional.

Ah i see. Actually come to think of it, yeah it works really well in your song. Gives it a lo-fi feels, grimey like you say. I like dark.... make some more ! !

Something else I just realized about my drum problems - all that could've been solved with the Dr. REX. One of my friends was showing me how to use that and for some reason I had it confused for the NNXT.

Well, it's a Halloween thread and last night was Halloween. Any updates? Have you done anything else with that track yet?

Last night was our big once-a-year Halloween gig. John was the drummer in the band and I was going to be helping the sound guy... It was a 4-hour long event that was going to be run by a bunch of amateurs who don't know what they're doing (myself included)... Sunday night (the night before Halloween) John and I happened to run into a friend who we hadn't seen in a long time. He's a professional audio engineer who's working for a company in Toronto and he also has his own business. He's worked on stage/sound/lighting crews for concerts for big-name bands that you'd hear all the time on the radio. He ended up coming to the event last night to oversee everything and help wherever needed - didn't even charge anything for his time. Everything ran SO much more smoothly with him there. He did all the sound so I ended up running a laptop computer for the night that was connected to a projector (shining on a big screen for the audience), running PowerPoint stuff and cueing/playing CD audio and DVD video clips. Maybe I'll PM you a few pics (since this is a public folder). I could probably send you some audio of the band too if you wanna hear it, later when we get the cd.

For right now I'll probably just leave it like it is, not uproot the old percussion or anything, and just keep these things in mind for my next track. drum&bass needs to be built from the percussion up, otherwise you end up with a really odd-fit.

On the Holloween concert though I saw your PM and sent you one back :)
