I've always preferred the villians who started out as scientists, but went mad.
Or, like V, the entire government is the villian.

What's your hero's gimmick, first and foremost? A villain can play off that quite well if it's done skilfully enough (see: Spider-Man/Venom, Mr Fantastic/Dr Doom, Superman/Lex Luthor).

It depends on teh genre, though, I personally prefer slightly effeminate long-haired villains

I'd be interested if the villain had a good motive. 'Greed' might work as a good motive - it corrupts the best of us.

So... think of a motivation to make someone evil and work from there.

In the comic book I'm making, the main villain hates everyone who is part of a prophecy and tries to kill them all, which would nearly be everyone in the book. Then there are some mindless beasts. Huge evil things. They're awesome. Follow any command given by someone more powerful than them. Then there's the idiotic greed-driven villain.

So, yeah. No using the exact idea of my prophecy-hater, I'm actually using him. But there's a few ideas I have, you can mess with them until you get one that you like! *smile*

Ah, darn it, I'm no help.

As some people have said, you really need to clarify what kind of comic it's going to be. For the more grim and gritty stuff, Kid Miracleman from "Miracleman" is the best villain going. My all time favourite, certainly. But then you have the more traditional and slightly naff all-round villains like Doctor Doom, or the masterminding villains like Lex Luthor, or the destructive villains like Sabertooth. But yeah, in my mind the best type of villain are the Kid Miracleman types - sadistic, cruel, violent and destructive beyond all comprehensible levels - the kind of person who'll kill every person on the planet just to get the hero's attention.

I do hope you're still working on this ...

I got to thinking that a really good villian could be some sort of alien life-form that meets up with the earth by accident, and in a fit of pique decides to drag the earth closer to the sun. A lot closer.

A villain is the nemesis of the main character, who tries to stop the hero from achieving his goal. That should help you.

what I do for my villains is to just think about the things I don't like in people and then put it into a character.
