yes you can win an MMORPG subscription in a contest. I won a copy of World of Warcraft in a drawing once... so you can win an MMORPG game.

as for the question you are actually asking... I will quote the movie Wargames. "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play"

You can "win" friends. You can "win" a nice piece of gear. You can't "beat" the game however, as new content will always be added to make you go slay some new dragon or craft that uber new sword.

The running joke is when you beat the highest end big nasty raid critter that "Well now we beat the game".

Yes, when you cancel your subscription :P.

The games are designed to be addictive and never ending. Even if you get to the highest level an expansion is right around the corner.

There's a theory behind that in .hack// Legend of the Twilight, if you care to read the manga.

Role-playing games don't have "winning" conditions. It's not a contest, it's an ongoing experience, with individual contests mixed in. I don't have experience with the online sort, as I know I'd start perseverating on it and neglect my family, but I've played tabletop RPGs for some years (it's actually a pretty good way to practice social interactions - there are rules and everything!), and I've run across the players who seemed to think there was something to "win", and tried to compete with the other players (by and large, you're supposed to cooperate, not compete). Usually, what they won was an invitation to either change their ways, or leave the game...

I play guildwars and it is possible to get the end credits going after completing the main story line. but the replay value is high.

Well technically you could "win" a game like World of Warcraft by rising to the top of the player vs. player ladder or beating the most difficult raid dungeon. But unless you're very skilled, have lots of very skilled friends AND play the game 24/7, I wouldn't recommend trying. And even if you do "win", your victory will be temporary, just like any real life successes.

The game is manufactured to keep you playing as long as possible. You cannot beat the game. The only way to truely beat the game is to cancel your subscription and uninstall.

Well, if you have the absolute perfect equipment for your character and you've beaten the most difficult challenges the game has to offer, what is their to really do other than PvP or level up another char... which is the same thing as starting a new file on a Single Player game, IMO. You can beat it for a few months until the next biggie comes out, in other words.

I find most peoples interest in the idea of winning anything kind of odd, I rarely do anything to "win" I just do things for fun (reading books playing games) or because I must (like washing dishes, eating)or because I value it (learning a language, doing stuff with my kids, although thats fun too....), role playing games are about experience you have fun doing it, not winning so no I guess not.

Of course I really am not competitive in anything much and that has always been a problem for me, at least when I was in school. I prefer sandbox games mostly and thats how I play most games, racing bores me , fighting games bore me, unless something really cool is involved beating a game bores me.I can also sit and sort pebbles by colour for hours on the beach and be greatly entertained.

I also meant to add I do like solving puzzles and figuring things out and doing stuff effectively , but it usually doesn't matter if someone else does first.

not sure about other games but it's possible to beat FFXI. it is designed similarly to single-player FF games in that it's storyline-based. you can progress through the storyline, fight bosses and eventually fight the final boss and see the ending to the storyline. of course the game doesnt really end. you can still continue the adventure with your character and do other stuff. you just 'completed' the main story of the game.

each expansion has its own storyline. so when you completed the storyline of the pre-expansion game, you can say you 'beat' FFXI. when you completed the storyline of the first expansion (rise of the zilart), you can say you 'beat' rise of the zilart.
