can anyone recommend some really awesome gothic metal band that's very big on the orchestral score and such?

There's a song by Within Temptation that is the perfect example of that I'm looking for but the rest of their stuff that I've listened to isn't like that.

Here's a sample:

from 0:33 to 0:55 and then again from 1:20 to 2:05...

Oh yes, yes, yes!

Try Nightwish, particularly Ghost Love Score. That is my absolute favorite.

Within temptation has some other orhcestral stuff too, I just don't remember which songs.

Epica is very orchestral, most of the time, but they also have death growls, which I am not hugely fond of.

If you like cello a lot try Apocalyptica. They are four cellos, or three cellos and a drummer, depending on which album.

I think that if you go to pandora.com, and search under shared stations you should find my pandora station called nightwish radio for (mostly) symphonic metal, although I also have Rammstein and Evanescense on there too.

Ah, the angst!

Wow, cool, a fellow fan!

As someone mentioned above, I also recommend Nightwish, especially their new album Dark Passion Play. I've heard Epica online and I was impressed. Lacuna Coil is also good, many of their songs are similar to what you're looking for but they don't fit the bill as much as Nightwish does.

Diablo Swing Orchestra is quite good. Lacrimosa also, if you're into the old school goth scene.

Dude, I totally agree about Lacuna Coil. XD

Cradle of Filth
Dimmu Borgir (though Dimmu and CoF both kinda sorta black metalish they both have good orchestral gothic metal elements)
Evanescence (particularly the song "Lacrymosa")
Lacrimosa (er...the BAND Lacrimosa...lol)
NightWish (Of course)
Tarja Turunen (yes, her solo album is very good sympho-metal)
Therion (eh, I don't like them though)
Virgin Black

Also I gotta second Diablo Swing Orchestra...
