I'm sure a lot of you have seen sites where you list a few songs and they recommend more based on the genre, sales of albums that were purchased together, etc. Personally, I found that they did an amazingly good job of pinpointing music that I hated.

Then I stumbled across www.pandora.com .. They took a different approach by completely ignoring genres, the kind of music an artist typically plays, combined album sales, etc. Instead they hire musicians to categorize individual songs by the instruments used, rhythm, structure, etc.

It does a very impressive job of picking out good music. I've been finding all kinds of music from bands I've never heard of before. More than once it's picked out really good songs from artists who I normally don't like and wouldn't have given a chance.

They claim that the free version runs advertisements, but I haven't heard one yet even after listening all day for a few days. I'm sure it will inevitably become clogged with 5 minutes of ads every 3 minutes, so enjoy it while it's still an underground thing! :)

I love pandora, in fact, I've been listening to their music stations nonstop for a couple of days. I think I've downloaded about seventy or so songs after hearing them there. It is, possibly, the best thing since sliced bread.
