Vetivert:
Vetiveria zizanoides-- The Oil of Tranquillity
Vetivert is a tall, tufted, perennial grass which is native to Sri Lanka and India. It is similar to lemongrass and citronella. It is cultivated for it's essential oils in the Philippines, Japan, South America, West Africa, and other places. The best oil comes from Reunion and is known as ‘Bourbon Vetivert’.
In Georgian and early Victorian times, the ‘essence of vetivert’ was used to scent handkerchiefs, especially amongst the wives of retired Indian merchants and officials.
A famous 19th century perfume, Mousseline des Indes, took its names from muslin which was scented with vetivert to protect against moths... quite a classy background.
Anyway. Thought it interesting. Probably been covered before... here's a reminder....
