Agree with JohnHopkins. The more agressive music can be great to let your frustrations out. When you feel like the world is crashing down, angry music where you recognise that anger in the lyrics can be a superb outlet. Metal for example can be very good for those purposes.
It basically all depends on my mood really. I just want lyrics that make me think, that I recognise myself in. That can vary from deeply intellectual stuff to more emo related stuff (there's been moments even "Monsoon" from Tokio Hotel has lifted up my mood
)
Generally, music that calms me would be things like
- Heather Nova
- A Perfect Circle (especially the more ethereal ones like Orestes or Brena)
- some tracks by Dido (especially Isobel but to lesser extent also Slide) ...
- And yes, Run by Snow Patrol is excellent
- some tracks by The Cranberries (such as Linger)
- Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode
- Charlotte Sometimes or Lovesong (The Cure)
- some stuff by Enya (eg Orinico Flow, Only If, ...)
- even a few Tool songs, especially Wings For Marie
- My Immortal (Evanescence)
But I find it hard to think of others, I basically don't need calm music, I just want the music to have content that I can relate to. In that way, some more agressive music can calm my mood better than a sweet ballad.
Songs such as Stinkfist (Tool), The Hollow (A Perfect Circle), Limelight (Rush), Slave to the Wage (Placebo), several Orphaned Land tracks, Hysteria (Muse) ... all rather up-tempo or even heavy songs that can lift up my moral in no time.
Music enraging?? Even the music I consider annoying (Britney, Snoop Dogg, Beyonce, ... well, most RnB and hiphop really) is not enraging me, if I don't like it I would rather turn off the TV than to throw stuff at it.
Maroon5 enraging? I would rather say arrousing, check the directors cut of the "This Love" video man
