Pardons for bumping an old thread, but I have SC IV now. Been playing it for the past couple of days...

and I just really want to rant a little...

So wow, really nice looking game. The AI has been reverted back to it's SC II form(no more instant guard impacting).

But I feel disappointed in this game.
First big flaw I come across is that the story mode is just too short and linear. I cleared every characters story in one day's time. Simply put, each character gets 5 stages, first one is a random battle usually, second one is a character encounter, third one is a sub-boss match with some... out-of the world character, fourth stage is another character encounter fight, and last stage is either... Siegfried, Nightmare or Al Gore(Algol, sorry, sorry...). I mean, SC II and III had much more involved story modes, many more fights, and different endings and routes. Why did they make this so ... plain? It's boring. It's pretty much the exact same thing with each character and it's boring...

Second big thing, is they fudged up the CaS system. It's not busted, but they changed things that didn't need to be changed from SC III. The way the new system is now... it's just screwy. The major flaw is is that you can either have a great looking character with NO skills, or have a s**t looking character with awesome skills. They should not have tied in the skill system with the outfit equipment. It's too complicated and limiting. Right away I thought of a much better way they could have done this. Have your four skill slots, and the character have like 300 skill points to allocate to whatever four skills you want the character to have. Hax skills would cost you a lot of points so wouldn't be able to use a bunch. It would be a fair and balanced system... and it would be simple to use. Why couldn't they have done that?
Part 2... Why f**k are there no original weapon styles that they had in SC III?
It's not a serious issue, but the problem it presents... is that of gender identity for the custom characters. You want a quick short sword fighter dude?... He'll probably have to use Xianghua's moveset... result?
The awesome sword fighter dude becomes gay. The original movesets in SC III were awesome to use for custom characters. Why are they not here? I would rather not use the main character's movesets for the above reason.

Third thing... Like previous SC games, the main characters do have different weapons they can use.
However unlike in the previous games... You wouldn't know how to equip them in this one unless someone tells you. And I tell you... it is ret*d.
The only way I've figured out how to make them use a new weapon, is to create another character of them in CaS with the new weapon equipped. Thus they get saved as a new version of that character in one of the CaS slots.
Now why the hell do I have to do that just to change weapons? In SC III you could just select your character and select the weapon and start the game. Why do I have to go through CaS to equip a new weapon? Not to mention they fill up one of the CaS slots. There are 50 slots for making custom characters... I would rather use that for making original characters than filling up half that with the default characters with different weapons.
This is just stupid.

So that out of that way...

Oh, one more thing. No battle theater. I liked having that just to entertain myself when I got bored... but it's not here. Again why?...

So that out of the way...
I still got the Tower of Souls thing to do. Haven't gotten too far, but I'll work my way through it.
Haven't messed with the online matches yet, but it's not a big deal to me. I'm not really an online gamer and I'm sure I'll get my ass handed to me since I generally suck at fighting games.
Other than that... I'm already feeling bored with this game.
It's not a bad game... It's not what I was expecting. It's already ranking at the bottom tier of the SC games for me. They just messed up the stuff I liked from the previous games, great story mode and the CaS. CaS was better in III. And things like the weapon equipping are just ass-backwards, it ticks me off.
It's like... they doubled their efforts with the graphics and halved it on everything else.

Ok, end of me ranting.

I agree about the story mode (the story mode they had in the last game was like the best part about the game, there was alot more freedom and role playing elements involved in it) and the levelling system being tied in with equipment 100%

and yeah the whole weapon style and move set is really annoying same goes for the taunts and victory/beginning speeches.

But i would like to add, when you got to create a character all the pre-built characters have their own slots to use up, so you don't have to use up one of your 50 slots. just click on (lets say astaroth) whilst in create a characters char select and you'll see what i mean.

Well, I just hope in the next game... (if they make another) that they make the single player stuff awesome again. It's just really lame in this one.

Anyway I have still been playing it off and on. Only thing I really have left to do is finish the Tower and buy all the CaS stuff. I'm stuck on the second to last set of floors. I only really want to finish it to get the easy money thing from Algol on 60.

you know... i guess i hadn't really thought about this mutch... because i always seem to apreciate the effort they've put into games and dont often hate a game. i think one of the big things that i like about it is... its soul calibur on ps3. yes. ps3. the one that can't play ps2 games... i probably would prefer to play SC3 to SC4... but it keeps me engaged when i got nuttin' to do. i have to say. i think some parts of the charecter creation were pretty wicked. the costumes were definatly better. but as you say. the equiptment+stats thing... doesn't really work well. and i mutch prefered the simplicity of the weapons special effects in sc3. and the story WAS alot better. okay overall. your right. sc3 was better. but i can't say i dont like sc4. its got some good qualitys. and the graphics are pretty good. oh but one thing that does get me is the main menu. now THAT they screwed up completely.

I'll buy it when it comes down in price.

not to mention I've got a cube and a PS2, along side with the 360.

and I'm in college.

I like COD4 right now.

(oh and if anyone here plays COD4 my screen name is Emperical ninja clan sign SGCA which is short for StarGate Command Authority)
