http://www.informath.org/apprise/a6400/b2024.pdf

It's in Swedish, but it's got some value since is embarassed about it now, as I understand it, since it's so very incorrect. The part about AS reads:

"Asperger's syndrome occurs in roughly 0.5 percent of all children. This group of children doesn't stand a chance if their handicap isn't recognized. It's about children who have deficiencies in social and emotional reciprocity. They're averagely gifted, sometimes gifted within a narrow subject. They can become super specialists at astronomy or dinosaurs, but also at things that aren't accepted in society. They often have a need to repeat things.

To be able to develop in spite of their disability, many are dependent on a personal assistant or other "individual helper" who can teach and train them in social interplay and help them towards hobbies that are harmless and so that compulsive acts don't become too destructive."

This from a self-proclaimed expert on autism/AS and a few other labels, who's written tons of articles. His "research" is all about establishing negative stereotypes about people to warrant their institutionalization. He's truly a despicable person. Annoyingly enough, I've realized that he was the one responsible for the mass diagnosation during the 1990's in Sweden, the one I found myself a victim of just after I had graduated from high school. The social workers I had to deal with were indoctrinated in all these negative stereotypes and the way they treated me felt like a big rape, it took several months before I was able to convince them I didn't need them and get them to leave me alone. Afterwards I found myself having suppressed the memories for several years, only recalling what had happened like half a year ago or so.

Proving that people with AS are mentally incompetent and dangerous is his game, and he's made a lot of money from big pharma and research funding in it. In Sweden, he's got an establishment around him that stalks people that question him, mostly in the shape of the organization Attention. Feel free to spit every time you hear his name, because he's the most evil man there is in the autism world.

Maybe we should give prizes for bad research every year, like the Razzies, and a statuette for the most evil researcher of the year. What to call it . . . the Frankenstein?

Gillberg may be bad, but he's got company. We need more Lorna Wings. Maybe we could give a prize to the best researcher/paper every year, too. Yeah, that's it!

Except it wouldn't be gold plated. Gold-foil covered chocolate bunny, maybe, but not gold plated. We don't have that kind of money.

I am kind of serious about the "razzies", and I'm glad you posted your opinion on Gillberg.

There was an award for bad research, but its become politically charged recently. That being said, Erich von Danniken won one :P

The Ig Nobel Prizes

Erich won his at the inaugural awards, for Literature.

I have no idea what you are referring to, about "politically charged", unless you mean this stupidity.

Watch out for this year's awards, Thursday, October 2nd.

No, to that I was not referencing. Forgive me. I meant the reasons that Doctor Edward Teller was awarded one.

B... b... but... he got his at the same time (1991, first awards) as Erich. Ed got his for Peace (Hydrogen bomb and Star Wars).

Last year's award for Aviation seems richly deserved:
Quote:
AVIATION: Patricia V. Agostino, Santiago A. Plano and Diego A. Golombek of Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Argentina, for their discovery that Viagra aids jetlag recovery in hamsters.
REFERENCE: "Sildenafil Accelerates Reentrainment of Circadian Rhythms After Advancing Light Schedules," Patricia V. Agostino, Santiago A. Plano and Diego A. Golombek, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol. 104, no. 23, June 5 2007, pp. 9834-9.
WHO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY: Diego A. Golombek

I do wonder who the nominees are this year.

That is true. Surely I didn't mean to sound like I wanted some kind of intellectual debate. Please forgive me; I meant no offense.

There is a full English translation of the article on the same web site. I cannot enter web addresses, but it has the same address as the Swedish original except change "b2024" to "b2023".

There is also much more information about the Gillberg on the same web site. Google for "gillberg affair" to find it.

The Gillberg affair: scientists are concerned about fraud in his research. To get out of having them look at his data, his colleagues destroy it. He and his colleagues are given suspended sentences and fines but continue to do research.

Thank you very much for posting that information. The page I found when I googled "gillberg affair" was quite informative.

If it wasn't for obstinate aspies who know their riteousness despite what the herd of sheep that is society says, the human race would not be where it is today.

I'm not sure what he means by harmful [harmful to what, exactly?] But I am guessing he has some hidden, political agendas.

He should just die. lol

Did he ever specify exactly what those "unacceptable" interests are, or does he just make up his slander as he goes along? I'd say he's on shaky ground legally and intellectually. He's just called us a bunch of perverts. Anybody got his email address? I'd like a word with him.....
